As members of the Auburn community and representing the many students who participate in co-curricular activities, we would like to ask for support of the proposition that is being presented by the Auburn school board for a vote on Dec. 1. Before making a decision on this proposition we ask that voters please take the time to note what this money will do, who will be affected and what will happen if the improvements are not made now.
The proposition gives authorization for capital improvements that are sorely needed by the district to maintain current facilities that are being used by students daily. The work entails bringing some buildings up to code, security systems and upgrades for accessibility and safety. The improvements that will be made are required by law and will eventually be factored into future costs for the community, some immediately and some within the next couple of years. One example is the installation of strobe lights, required by law, to alert students with certain conditions of an emergency. The money is not related to turf fields or cosmetic additions.
Yes, some of the money will go to improvement of existing facilities. But many children use these facilities throughout the school year. Holland Stadium is a great example. Obviously it is an important site for the athletic program. Did you know that the marching band competes there, as well? Every June all the fifth-graders meet behind East Middle School to compete in a spirited end-of-elementary school celebration before moving onto the new world of middle school. For decades Auburn High School graduates marched across the field to receive their diplomas and celebrate with family and friends. The concrete bleachers are crumbling and dangerous. If they are not repaired, either an individual may get hurt or the stadium becomes unusable.
The maintenance of our school facilities is an important part of providing our children and grandchildren with a community that is one they can flourish in and be proud of. For a maximum cost of $1.33 per month, $.92 for Basic STAR and $.58 for Senior STAR, less than a cup of coffee per day, the district can make the necessary improvements. The cost of maintenance is much less than the cost of rebuilding or lawsuits or allowing facilities to be closed. The school children of Auburn are the first ones to benefit but ultimately the community benefits as well. On Dec. 1, make an informed decision, go out and vote and support this proposition.

What improvements are required by law in this project? A family member just lost her job of about $40,000 a year so how do you think she will vote for this tax increase? Why should the senior citizens support this project ? The school board needs to revisit this proposal and cut all the wants out and then have the vote . I will be voting no . "

This project has too many holes in it...not matter who's at the helm. "
