Our View: Hit & Misses

Saturday, November 21, 2009 11:54 PM EST

HIT: To the reopening of the Auburn Movieplex 10 on Grant Avenue. The theater, owned by a bankrupt company, shut down without much warning last month, leaving its employees jobless and the area with one less place to watch films.
Now, two brothers have bought the Movieplex and plan on bringing it back, giving movie fans more choices. Hopefully, the old employees will come back as well. With the holiday season approaching, more films are coming out so it's nice to have more screens to see them.

So get the popcorn popping and roll the projector.

MISS: To the theft of a motor boat engine from a Brutus residence this past week. The engine, from 1968, was for sale but someone decided to help themselves.

Maybe the engine was stolen for parts, or to sell its materials for scrap.

No matter the reason, we hope the people responsible are found as soon as possible.

HIT: To the announcement that Wells College is forming a women's basketball team that will start play in the 2010-2011 season.

Since going coed a few years ago, Wells has added a few men's sports, now they're adding women's basketball. Team sports such as basketball can add to the quality of life on campus, creating a rallying point for school spirit. We wish the new team good luck in its first season.

HIT: To the news that the next Founders Day celebration will recognize Theodore Case, the inventor of talking pictures.

The first Founders Day celebration which featured former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was a rousing success with hundreds of people coming to downtown Auburn for a parade and a festival.

It's great to see something catch on so quickly and have a positive impact on the community. The hope is that famed director Steven Spielberg will come to Auburn to participate, we hope it happens.
