The sign outside the Auburn Movieplex on Wednesday announces that it will be reopening Friday.
The 10-screen theater in Sennett is scheduled to reopen Friday under new ownership. The Movieplex closed about a month ago, when former parent company Cinema North suddenly shut down its theaters across the Northeast.

The new owners are brothers Jason and Jeff Yantz, who are taking on their first independent venture after years of combined experience in the movie business. They are sons of Bill Yantz, owner of Rochester Theatre Management, which runs the cinema at Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius.

Jason Yantz said Monday that they will do some basic cleanup in the building, but much of the cinema will initially remain the same. There will be improvements within the next year throughout the facility, he said.

“We're going to fix the theater up,” Yantz said. “The customers are definitely going to see a change at the theater for the better.”

Movies to run on Friday include the new “Twilight” film, “The Blind Side,” “Planet 51,” “Michael Jackson: This Is It,” “Where the Wild Things Are” and more.

A complete list of movies and show times can be accessed by calling 255-4635. A Web site is also in the works.

Yantz said they are working on hiring a full-service staff, and he said he has talked to the theater's former manager about extending offers to the employees who lost work when the cinema closed.

He said the theater will likely accept movie passes for a while that were given out by former ownership.

There will also not be as much “direct competition” between the Auburn area's two major theaters, Yantz continued. With the obvious family connection, he said ownership from the two companies will work more with each other than in the past.

Yantz said he and his brother are ready to succeed on their own in an industry they love.

“It's great to bring this entertainment to live (audiences) and give people a nice place to go and have an escape,” he said.

The Movieplex unexpectedly shut down in October. It was one of many theaters operated by Cinema North in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts to close without prior notice.

The only explanation was a handwritten sign on the front doors that said “temporarily closed.”

The parent company is based in Rutland, Vt., and seemingly has ceased business operations since that move.

At least one other of the Cinema North complexes will open under new ownership. According to published news reports, an eight-screen cinema in North Adams, Mass., is also opening Friday.

Along with the cinema in the mall, there are two other working movie theaters in the Auburn area: Auburn Public Theater and the Finger Lakes Drive-In in Aurelius.
