A mention in Sarah Palin's new book might have some in Auburn remembering the success of the city's first Founders Day. But Auburn officials are already looking to the next one.
City Manager Mark Palesh said this week that the theme of the second annual Founders Day will be Theodore Case and the invention of talking movies.
Palesh also said June 12 is tentatively set as the event's date.
Born in Auburn, Case pioneered a system to put sound onto film in the early 20th century. Organizers chose the theme for next year hoping there will be growing interest in a movie project currently under way by director Steven Spielberg about Abraham Lincoln and his presidential cabinet, Palesh said.
There is a strong local connection to that cabinet, as Secretary of State William Seward was an Auburn resident.
Founders Day began as a way for the city to celebrate significant people, places and events through its history. The first event took place June 6 downtown and included a parade, talks by elected officials, a street fair, craft vendors and other activities throughout the day.
This year, the theme was the 50th anniversary of Alaskan statehood. Seward was instrumental in the purchase of the Alaskan territory during his tenure as secretary of state.
Palin, former governor of Alaska, participated in the parade and spoke at the event.
