Former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin drops a lot of big names in her new book.
Chet Susslin / The Citizen
Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, right, rides with her husband Todd and daughter Willow in Auburn's Founders Day parade on June 6.
But when the first copies are picked up today, readers will see a few local names included with the others.

The city of Auburn and some of its most famous historic residents are mentioned in “Going Rogue,” Palin's highly anticipated memoir released today. The book details her experiences on the 2008 campaign and examines the events that got her there.

Early in the book, Palin also touches on a trip she took this summer to participate in Auburn's first-ever Founders Day. The June 6 event celebrated the 50th anniversary of Alaskan statehood.

William Seward, one of Auburn's most famous residents, was responsible for the United States' purchase of Alaska.

On pages 12-13, Palin points out that Seward dealt with a lot of criticism for the purchase, which was panned as “Seward's Folly.” But she called him a “visionary” for seeing the land's valuable resources and strategic position.

“Decades later, (Seward) was posthumously vindicated, as purveyors of unpopular common sense often are,” Palin writes.

She also calls her visit to Auburn and the Finger Lakes “inspiring,” stating she was able to visit sites associated with “heroic figures” like Harriet Tubman - who helped runaway slaves escape through the Underground Railroad - and women's rights pioneers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

Palin recalls in the book seeing Tubman's home in Auburn, a visit that took place the day before Founders Day.

“As with Seward, Tubman hadn't taken the easy path. But it was the right path,” Palin writes.

Palin issued a statement Monday regarding the impact her visit to the Finger Lakes region had on her.

“Some of the most amazing people I know, or have read about, have roots in this special area. From suffragists in the early days of the women's rights movement, to my spokesperson, Meghan Stapleton, this is an amazing place. I tell my daughters, ‘There must be something in the water in these parts.'”

Stapleton is an Auburn native who traveled with Palin when she visited the area in June.

Published by HarperCollins, “Going Rogue” is being released in the midst of a national media blitz. According to reports published by the Associated Press, the book has been on multiple best-seller lists for weeks. It has a first printing of 1.5 million copies, exceeds 400 pages and contains dozens of color photos.

Palin is scheduled to appear on a string of national television shows in the coming days and is in the midst of a large book tour.

That tour will bring her to Rochester on Saturday, when Palin is scheduled to be at the Borders on Hylan Drive from 6 to 9 p.m.

Founders Day is expected to be an annual celebration of the Auburn's history. Each year, the festival is to highlight a new historically significant person or event with a local connection.

" Wow, Karl the Liberal.

You are awfully passionate in your hatred for this "liar", as you see her. Good to see you care so much for your country. If you feel this way about Palin, you should keep up the good fight.

I'm quite confident that you are in for more than you bargained for. Thus, I suggest you try to mature your arguments. For if you simply are going to yell like a 6 year old, "liar, liar, pants on fire", I suggest you are in for a big, big surprise.

You and other liberals underestimate Palin to your own peril.

If you care about your arguments, you'd better improve your approach. For it is very, very tedious and boring. Step up to the plate, my friend. You can do better than that.

In liberty!

" "Conservatives for Palin"?!?!

HA HA HA HO HO HO HE HE HE!!!
YOU GAWDA BE KIDDING!

Palin lied when she said the dismissal of her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, had nothing to do with his refusal to fire state trooper Mike Wooten; in fact, the Branchflower Report concluded that she repeatedly abused her power when dealing with both men.

Palin lied when she repeatedly claimed to have said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere; in fact, she openly campaigned for the federal project when running for governor.

Palin lied when she denied that Wasilla's police chief and librarian had been fired; in fact, both were given letters of termination the previous day.

Palin lied when she wrote in the NYT that a comprehensive review by Alaska wildlife officials showed that polar bears were not endangered; in fact, email correspondence between those scientists showed the opposite.

Palin lied when she claimed in her convention speech that an oil gas pipeline "began" under her guidance; in fact, the pipeline was years from breaking ground, if at all.

Palin lied when she told Charlie Gibson that she does not pass judgment on gay people; in fact, she opposes all rights between gay spouses and belongs to a church that promotes conversion therapy.

Palin lied when she denied having said that humans do not contribute to climate change; in fact, she had previously proclaimed that human activity was not to blame.

Palin lied when she claimed that Alaska produces 20 percent of the country's domestic energy supply; in fact, the actual figures, based on any interpretation of her words, are much, much lower.

Palin lied when she told voters she improvised her convention speech when her teleprompter stopped working properly; in fact, all reports showed that the machine had functioned perfectly and that her speech had closely followed the script.

Palin lied when she recalled asking her daughters to vote on whether she should accept the VP offer; in fact, her story contradicts details given by her husband, the McCain campaign, and even Palin herself. (She later added another version.)

Palin lied when she claimed to have taken a voluntary pay cut as mayor; in fact, as councilmember she had voted against a raise for the mayor, but subsequent raises had taken effect by the time she was mayor.

Palin lied when she insisted that Wooten's divorce proceedings had caused his confidential records to become public; in fact, court officials confirmed they released no such records.

Palin lied when she suggested to Katie Couric that she was involved in trade missions with Russia; in fact, she has never even met with Russian officials.

Palin lied when she told Shimon Peres that the only flag in her office was the Israeli flag; in fact, she has several flags.

Palin lied when she claimed to have tried to divest government funds from Sudan; in fact, her administration openly opposed a bill that would have done just that.

Palin lied when she repeatedly claimed that troop levels in Iraq were back to pre-surge levels; in fact, even she acknowledged her "misstatements," though she refused to retract or apologize.

Palin lied when she insisted that the Branchflower Report "showed there was no unlawful or unethical activity on my part"; in fact, that report prominently stated, "Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."

Palin lied when she claimed to have voiced concerns over Wooten fearing he would harm her family; in fact, she actually decreased her security detail during that period.

Palin lied when asked about the $150,000 worth of clothes provided by the RNC; in fact, solid reporting contradicted several parts of her statement.

Palin lied when she suggested that she had offered the media proof of her pregnancy with Trig to "correct the record"; in fact, no reports of her medical records were ever published; and the letter from her doctor testifying to her good health only emerged hours before polling ended on election day, even though there was nothing in it that couldn't have been released two months earlier.

Palin lied when she said that "reported" allegations of her banning Harry Potter as mayor was easily refutable because it had not even been written yet; in fact, the first book in that series was published in 1998 - two years into her first term - and such rumors were never reported by the media, only circulated as emails.

Palin lied when she denied having participated in a clothes audit with campaign laywers; in fact, the Washington Times later confirmed those details.

Palin lied when asked about Couric's question regarding her reading habits; in fact, Couric's words were not, "What do you read up there in Alaska?" or anything close to condescension.

Palin lied when she mischaracterized the "$1200 check" given to Alaskans as the permanent fund dividend check; in fact, that fund had yielded $2,069 per person, and she claimed otherwise to obscure the fact that Alaskans also received a $1200 rebate check from a windfall profits tax on oil companies - a tax widely criticized by Republicans.

Palin lied when she claimed to be unaware of a turkey being slaughtered behind her during a filmed interview; in fact, the cameraman said she had picked the spot herself, while the slaughter was underway.

Palin lied when she denied having rejected federal stimulus money; in fact, she continued to accept and reject the funds several times.

Palin lied when she claimed that legislative leaders had canceled a meeting with her to hold their own press conference; in fact, they only canceled it after being told she would not participate, and the purpose of the press conference was very different from the meeting's.

Palin lied when she announced on the news that she never holds closed-door meetings; in fact, she had just attended a closed-door meeting with the legislature earlier that day.

Palin lied when she said that former aide John Bitney's "amicable" departure was for "personal" reasons; in fact, Bitney said he was fired because of his relationship with the wife of Palin's friend, plus a Palin spokesperson later claimed "poor job performance" for his firing - without elaborating.

Palin lied when she said she kept her running injury a secret on the campaign trail; in fact, her bandaged hand was clearly visible in photographs and the story was widely talked about.

Palin lied when she claimed that Alaska has spent "millions of dollars" on litigation related to her ethics complaints; in fact, that figure is much, much lower, and she had initiated the most expensive inquiry.

Palin lied when she denied that the Alaska Independence Party supports secession and denied that her husband had been a member; in fact, even the McCain campaign noted that the party's very existence is based on secession and that Todd was a member for seven years.

VERDICT? PALIN IS A LIAR! "

Voting a certain way because her father had a plane, leaving a "potential fire hazard at the house, and the crap about the snowmobile races, it's normal daily issues. Again, sorry for the inconvenience. "

And as we have shown, the AP's list of facts that it has a problem with in the book are ludicrous, and very easily refuted. As are most of the misperceptions about Palin.

Have a great evening, all! "

The whole bunch of "lies" are a bunch of insinuations, and bad ones at that. NO, I wasn't slamming Sarah, you will never see that from me. Sorry for the mistake, I should have posted LOL. "

auburnadvocate wrote on Nov 17, 2009 2:39 PM:

" Movesouth: Here's a "fact check" of your "fact checkers":

Movesouth's "fact": As Wasilla mayor, Palin pressed for a special zoning exception so she could sell her family's $327,000 house, then did not keep a promise to remove a potential fire hazard on the property.

She asked the city council to loosen rules for snow machine races when she and her husband owned a snow machine store, and cast a tie-breaking vote to exempt taxes on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one. But she stepped away from the table in 1997 when the council considered a grant for the Iron Dog snow machine race in which her husband competes.

ACTUAL TRUTH: When the Palins purchased their prior home in Wasilla, it was already in violation of the “special zoning” rule. Such rules have always been only loosely enforced in Alaska. The home wasn’t in violation of any zoning regulation when it was originally built, but subsequent construction around it changed that. The Palins applied for a setback variance in order to sell their home. This is very common in Wasilla and elsewhere. There was nothing at all out of the ordinary about it, and it certainly did not involve any favoritism. The “potential fire hazard” in question was a carport that the Palins offered to tear down, but the new owner wanted it left alone.

Todd Palin’s old snowmachine store was located in Big Lake, which is 20 miles outside of the Wasilla city limits. Governor Palin’s father-in-law lives in Dillingham, which is about 450 miles away from Wasilla. The plane in question was not even registered in his name.

Movesouth's "fact": Palin correctly quotes a comment attributed to Obama in January 2008, when he told San Francisco Chronicle editors that under his cap-and-trade climate proposal, "electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket" as utilities are forced to retrofit coal burning power plants to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Obama has argued since then that climate legislation can blunt the cost to consumers. Democratic legislation now before Congress calls for a variety of measures aimed at mitigating consumer costs. Several studies predict average household costs probably would be $100 to $145 a year. "

ACTUAL TRUTH: THE TRUTH: As even the AP notes, Governor Palin correctly quoted Obama’s statement that “electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

And despite how the AP would like to spin it, the Waxman-Markey Cap-and-Trade Bill would make prices skyrocket. As Ben Lieberman of the Heritage Foundation notes:

“…the higher energy costs kick in as soon as the bill's provisions take effect in 2012. For a household of four, energy costs go up $436 that year, and they eventually reach $1,241 in 2035 and average $829 annually over that span. Electricity costs go up 90 percent by 2035, gasoline by 58 percent, and natural gas by 55 percent by 2035. The cumulative higher energy costs for a family of four by then will be nearly $20,000.

But direct energy costs are only part of the consumer impact. Nearly everything goes up, since higher energy costs raise production costs. If you look at the total cost of Waxman-Markey, it works out to an average of $2,979 annually from 2012-2035 for a household of four. By 2035 alone, the total cost is over $4,600.”

"PALIN: Writes about a city councilman in Wasilla, Alaska, who owned a garbage truck company and tried to push through an ordinance requiring residents of new subdivisions to pay for trash removal instead of taking it to the dump for free — this to illustrate conflicts of interest she stood against as a public servant.

THE FACTS: As Wasilla mayor, Palin pressed for a special zoning exception so she could sell her family's $327,000 house, then did not keep a promise to remove a potential fire hazard on the property.

She asked the city council to loosen rules for snow machine races when she and her husband owned a snow machine store, and cast a tie-breaking vote to exempt taxes on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one. PALIN: Says Obama has admitted that the climate change policy he seeks will cause people's electricity bills to "skyrocket."

" Teacher1, thanks for your support.

Wow, there are a lot of very bitter leftists who post on this site.

And many of them do not know how to separate fact from fiction. Liberal Karl, for example, is obviously easily swayed by democrat talking points as well as a bunch of "fact checks" that actually are easily refuted, if one does some real research.

The writers of the AP fact checks have their own agendas, and just feed a lot of this garbage to people, and of course Liberal Karl and others eat it up and spit it back out, without a moment of thought. The propaganda that is out there is stunning, and downright scarey.

But regardless of the above, so many leftists (and likely those just as skewed too far on the right) are unwilling to put aside differences when it comes to a major positive for Auburn. Founders Day was about Auburn, and about Seward and our connections with Alaska. And if this is brought up by a national figure, whether it be Palin, or Hillary Clinton, or Obama, or Spielberg, or anyone else for that matter that is willing to do so, it is good for our town.

I give Palin all the credit in the world for giving us just a bit of a spotlight. And I thank her. "

Whether folks agree or disagree with her politics, this is terrific for Auburn.

And "former resident", thank goodness you are indeed a former resident. It sounds like this city is better off without you. I wish you the best, and hope you eventually find a kind word to say about something in life. Then maybe you'll come back, and have something good to say. "

former resident of auburn wrote on Nov 17, 2009 2:07 AM:

" With all the LIES, smears and cheap shots in the book, the mention of Auburn is not going to make people come in droves to visit. This book will go down in history as a failed campaign of a woman who thinks she can be president of this country, all while blaming everyone but herself for her mistakes. I look forward to her being indicted for financial crimes committed while she was governor of Alaska. The bigger her LIES, the more evidence can be used against her. We will know her by her actions... "
