Wells College added women's basketball as a varsity sport for the 2010-2011 season on Monday, naming Mike O'Brien head coach.
The Express will begin play in the North Eastern Athletic Conference with the winner of the postseason conference tournament earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
O'Brien spent last season as an assistant coach at Mohawk Valley Community College, helping guide the Hawks to a 28-3 record, the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship, and a spot in the NJCAA Region III championship game. Prior to Mohawk Valley, O'Brien was an assistant at Nazareth College.
He has more than 10 years of coaching experience at the junior high, high school and collegiate levels, accumulating an overall head coaching record of 121-50.
Women's basketball becomes the eighth women's varsity team at Wells, joining soccer, cross country, field hockey, swimming, lacrosse, softball and tennis. There are five men's sports programs.
