Jordan-Elbridge's Mike Marrero finished his senior cross country season on a high note, placing 10th overall (16:23.8) for Section III, Class C at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday.
“He ran an outstanding race,” Eagles coach Roger Roman said. “He was running with the big boys in the top five for the first half, he slipped a bit but finished up in a real fine showing. He and (Skaneateles') Calvin Davis were on the Section III championship team as Section III won by almost 200 points over the next section.”
Last season, Marrero finished 13th at states and reached his goal this season by placing better at the event.
Davis came in just behind Marrero in 13th place (16:28.1), making a late push toward the front of the pack.
“He got boxed out early on,” Lakers coach Jack Reed said. “He fought back and passed 70 to 80 kids to put himself in the top 20 and then in the last mile or so he moved himself into 13th position. It was a really good finish for him.”
Auburn sent two runners, both juniors, for Class A. Pat Lattimore took 57th place overall (17:01.0) and on the girls side, Kim Lupo finished 105th (21:52.4).
