City says new pickup schedule is successful

Auburn city officials are saying the new curbside pickup schedule is a good update to the program, despite some early trials.
The city is also asking residents to remember newer policies on bagging leaves, which officials say make the process more efficient.

On Nov. 2, Auburn began picking up trash and recyclables Tuesdays through Thursdays. The city previously picked up trash on a five-day schedule.

City crews now dedicate Monday to leaves, grass, brush and other yard waste. In the past, that material was picked up as crews were available.

City Sanitation Supervisor Michael Talbot said late last week that the new program has been “really successful” so far. City officials expected some skips and other early bumps, but Talbot said as people get used to the new schedule, it will get smoother.

“The guys worked really hard,” he said of the Auburn Public Works crews working on the compactors.

The city structured the new schedule to affect as few people as possible, and most of the population has the same trash day as before.

The yard waste regulations also remain the same, requiring residents to place leaves and clippings in separate containers or clear bags, as well as stating that branches can be no bigger than four inches in diameter and four feet long or less.

City Manager Mark Palesh said bagging leaves has been the biggest issue so far, as some people are pushing leaves into the street.

Palesh understands that used to be the way the leaves were picked up, he said. But he asking residents to work with the city and the new policy and keep leaves out of the gutter.

“We have had a lot of good participation,” Palesh said. “It's going to take a while for people to get used to (the changes).”

The new schedule is an attempt to make the pickup process as efficient as possible while utilizing the same amount of public works staff.

The city has distributed brochures that explain the pickup schedule and regulations to all residents. Those who want more information of the city's curbside pickup policy can visit the city of Auburn Web site at http://ci.auburn.ny.us or call the solid waste department at 255-4155.

" Hey Andy, Do you really think they rip open all those bags and discard the plastic properly? Well, the answer is no. That was my point in which this is a foolish system. Bring back the vacuum trucks like other city and towns use. "

" I am not concerned about leaf pickup nor which day i set the trash out> What does concern me is the sidewalk/curb work being done on the west end of town. The corners of Garrow St and Fitch Ave have been torn up for over a month and during this time weren`t properly protected! I had to call into city hall to get barriers erected around them after they sat unprotected for well over two weeks. "

" Why are the leaves put in plastic bags that have to be removed at the landfill to dispose of the leaves? Or are the bags of leaves just dumped wholesale into the landfill? "

" Successful? I guess the city was successful in draining my wallet for the cost of bags. The city is also successful in polluting our land with thousands of bags of plastic each year. One step closer to that "green city" huh? "

" It is now, Wednesday and the bags of leaves, that I worked hard on getting out to the curb, by monday, are still sitting at the curb. This article keeps saying that "the people" will get used to it. I think "the people" have gotten used to it. They had them at the curb on monday but "the city" did not pick them up. So, it is not "the people" that has to get used to it, it is "the city" personnel that has to get used to it. "

" Congratulations to the City on clarifying/creating this policy. Now, homeowners can predictably clear debris from their properties. The result will be prettier neighborhoods and a healthier city with less places for mosquitoes and other infectious creatures to hide. Well done City! "

" I spent 250.00 on a leaf sweeper and now I have to bag the leaves? Mother nature put them in my yard so i'll just mow them up and let them blow away now. "
