Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To the Cayuga County Chapter of the American Red Cross, for organizing its “Give Peace a Chance” weekend.
A bazaar, workshops and outstanding live entertainment were all part of the mix in downtown Auburn over the weekend.

It was a unique event that not only brought some art and culture to the community, but also gave people some things to think about.

MISS: To the person who stole a 1950 vintage bicycle left outside the Tops supermarket in Auburn in September.

The Auburn Police Department is investigating the case of this bicycle theft, pointing out that the owner only wants the bike back because it has so much sentimental value.

It's a sad reflection of society that a person cannot feel secure leaving their bicycle outside a store while they go inside to make a purchase - but it's reality these days.

If anyone knows anything that can help the APD with this case, give them a call.

HIT: To a string of beautiful November days in central New York.

Perhaps it's Mother Nature's way of telling us to go outside and get all of those leaves raked up, but even if it means some extra yard work, we'll take it. This short run of warm, dry weather is something to savor, because it won't be long until freezing temperatures and snowflakes will settle in for their long stay.

HIT: To the start of the college basketball season, which once again brings plenty of hope for fans of Syracuse University's men's team.

SU certainly has some big pieces missing from last year's team, which brought the program back to national prominence with a solid showing in NCAA Tournament. But you also get a sense from Coach Jim Boeheim's remarks this offseason that he believes there could be something special about this year's team, which will feature several key players with plenty of experience.
