The sweet sounds of three B's - Beethoven, Bach and British - will surround music lovers at the Auburn Chamber Orchestra's performance at Auburn Alliance Church Friday night. The program, featuring many challenging pieces, is set to showcase the renowned talent of the group.
Conductor Erik Kibbelsbeck, one of four guest conductors for the season, will perform this week. The orchestra performs four times a year.
Marion Fritz, president of the board of directors, said conductors are pulled from either Ithaca College or the Eastman School of Music. The organization has performed for the past 35 or 36 years, she said. As a violinist herself, Fritz said the orchestra is looking for the gamut of string players.
“Strings are a problem for us,” she said. “Outlying schools either don't have orchestras or the musicians go to the Syracuse Symphony.”
Friday night's program begins with the “Overture to King Stephen” by Beethoven, followed by Handel pieces “Solomon and the Queen of Sheba” and the “Largo” aria of “Xerxes.”
Andrew Bennette from the Ithaca School of Music will play trombone for “Morceau Symphonique” by Alexandre Guilmant as well as the final piece, the “Bluebells of Scotland” by Arthur Pyror, a challenging piece for even the best trombonists.
The “Egmont Overture” by Beethoven, followed by an “English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, leads to the “Capriol Suite,” a set of dances in six movements, by Peter Warlock.
The orchestra includes between 30 and 35 musicians, depending on the repertoire. They are all volunteers from the area, with the conductor being the only paid performer. A few high school students are also performing on the bass and second violin.
Many of the musicians are retirees - teachers, doctors, lawyers and more, Fritz said. Musical choices provide a good variety.
There will be refreshments provided by the hospitality committee. The chamber is supported by Wegmans and Tops through gift cards to provide goodies.
The orchestra will perform its Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 13, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Auburn.
Don Larsen, president of Cayuga Community College, will be a featured vocalist on March 5 during a performance at the college, followed by the final concert in May on Mother's Day weekend.
