ALBANY - The Democrat running for Congress in a traditionally Republican northern New York district has raised more money than the GOP and Conservative candidates combined.
Federal election filings released Friday show Bill Owens raised more than $502,000 between July 1 and Oct. 14 in his quest to fill the 23rd House seat vacated by Secretary to the Army John McHugh. He has spent about $374,000, and has $128,000 on hand.
Most of the individuals donating money to Owens' campaign live in New York state. He has also had contributions from the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Republican Assemblywoman Dierdre Scozzafava raised more than $233,000 during the same period, and spent almost $205,000. She loaned her campaign $12,000 and had $40,000 on hand.
Conservative nominee Doug Hoffman raised $205,000 and spent $234,000. He loaned his campaign $102,000 and had $73,000 on hand.
New York's 23rd Congressional District is a sprawling, 11-county area where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by 45,000, but President Barack Obama won the district in 2008. The Nov. 3 election is testing the GOP, which is trying to build momentum after major defeats in 2008.
