UNION SPRINGS- Celebrating the team's senior night, the Southern Springs field hockey team played well, but still fell 6-2 to a strong Moravia squad Wednesday.
The Blue Devils have one more homestand before the Section IV, Class C playoffs and look ready putting up three goals in the first half and three in the second.
Despite the even amount of scoring for Moravia throughout the game, in the second half, Moravia looked much stronger and had a better hold defensively.
“We were a little crowded in the start of the game but then we spread out and started passing much better,” Blue Devils junior Hannah Mackey said. “We did a decent job but we could have played a little better in the first half.”
Mackey led the way for Moravia, recording two goals and one assist, while Haley Potter chipped in two goals, Michelle Vargason posted one goal and one assist, Maria Heffernan added one goal and Katie Lupo finished with one assist.
Blue Devils goalie Amanda Stone collected five saves as Southern Springs came out swinging a little harder than the Blue Devils had anticipated.
“We knew that we could beat them because we had before,” Mackey said. “But they were much stronger this time and got more goals than we expected them to. It was a really good game and we actually had a lot of fun playing with them.”
Melana Ott scored both goals for Southern Springs with one in the first half, assisted by Molly Clifford and the second goal came in the second half as they tried to stage a late rally.
Both teams have just one more regular season game, as Southern Springs waits to see if they will have a chance at playing in sectionals and Moravia prepares to face some tough opponents.
“This was our last home game and our senior night,” Southern Springs coach Mandy Wheaton said.
“We had definite spurts on intensity and when we were on our game we were playing at 110 percent. All the seniors played well, the best they have all season, they really stepped up. Hopefully we will get to go to sectionals and keep playing but we don't know yet.”
Moravia is feeling optimistic about their chances in their sectional journey.
“We will do well in sectionals,” Blue Devils senior Potter said.
“I have a good feeling and we expect to win every game we play. We definitely have our focus on Tioga right now, we know that we need to beat them this time without letting it get down to the wire like we have.”
Moravia has lost its last two games against Tioga in overtime battles and look to make sure it does not get that close this time.
“I am expecting good things in sectionals, we are ready,” Moravia coach Doug Langtry said.
“These girls are playing their hardest and they are looking strong, we played extremely well in the second half and if we can keep up that momentum we will do good things.”
Moravia hosts Newark Valley Friday, while Southern Springs (3-8) travel to Marathon Friday.
