PALERMO - A couple were sentenced to two years in jail for starving their 11-year-old daughter and allowing her to live in deplorable conditions before she was killed last summer.
Lynn and Lindsey Maxwell were convicted in August on four counts each of child endangerment. They were sentenced Monday night in Palermo Town Court. Their lawyer is appealing the convictions.

Erin Maxwell died in August 2008. Her 28-year-old stepbrother, Alan Jones, was convicted last month of strangling her.

Authorities say the family's home was littered with cat feces and garbage and there were dead kittens in the freezer. Witnesses testified during the Maxwells' trial that Erin was often locked in her room at night and was seen picking through garbage cans at school for food.

" how about all these people that saw her picking thru the garbage not doing a thing about it and knew that she was "locked up" for the night -where are they now "

" Two years?? That is absolutely rediculous. Like RAP said I don't know the maximum sentence either but I am guessing it is more than 2 years. Too bad their cells couldn't be in the same conditions that Erin had to live in. Seems the justice system failed this little girl. "

" The article states "Witnesses testified during the Maxwells' trial that Erin was often locked in her room at night and was seen picking through garbage cans at school for food. " I don't know the details, but I dare say the system failed this poor child. How many of us would see such a sight and not pursue the issue? Apparently, too many. "

" I don't know what the maximum sentence is, but the Maxwells should get it. Two years seems woefully inadequate punishment for mistreating and starving a little girl! "
