With 22 seconds remaining in the game, the Southern Cayuga boys soccer team scored the go-ahead goal to and top No. 2 state-ranked Marathon 2-1 Friday.
Zach Vannostrand gathered the ball 30 yards out and passed to Matt Bergenstock, who scored the winning goal.
The first goal for the Chiefs was posted midway through the first half by Jim Weber, who also led defensively, along with Pat Redmond and goalie Kevin Stockton.
Playing strong midfield for Southern Cayuga was Mike Killian.
“Our defense held very, very firmly,” Chiefs coach Terry Underwood said. “This is a really big win for a very young Southern Cayuga team.”
Marathon drops 9-2 on the season while Southern Cayuga improves to 7-6 and will host Groton for senior night Tuesday.
Trumansburg 5, Union Springs 0
Matt Orchard paced the Wolves with eight saves while Josh Terry, Brandon Jackson, John Ferro and Dominic Delaney also played well.
Union Springs (5-8) plays in Moravia Monday.
Lansing 12, Moravia 0
Freshman Jake Betts recorded 29 saves for the Blue Devils, while Zach Campanella played well defensively.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Auburn 47.5, Baldwinsville 46.5
The Maroons remain undefeated as it came down to the last relay, in which the Maroons had to get second and third place to pull out the win.
Taking second in the 400 freestyle relay was the team of Molly Blair, Tiffani Chehovich, Michaela Elliott and Mallorie Dygert (4:04.19) while Auburn also took third with Allison White, Brigid Cotter, Bethany Schroeder and Ashley King (4:07.74).
Schroeder won the 100 backstroke in a personal best (1:07.00), took third in a tie for the 50 freestyle and swam a leg of the 200 medley relay that finished second (22.88), along with Makenzie Hauger, Elliott and Mary Jane Leja.
Dygert finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:08.19), which along with King's second-place finish (2:09.85) helped Auburn take an early lead. In the 100 free, Dygert took second while Leja finished third. Leja earned a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (26.92) and was the freshman anchor for the 200 freestyle relay team that won (1:47.54) with Hauger, King and Dygert.
Hauger was first in the 200 IM (2:29.00) and in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.32), while King won the 500 freestyle (5:48.44).
Auburn (5-0) travels to Skaneateles Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL
Moravia 3, Whitney Point 0
The Blue Devils won 25-21, 25-7 and 25-5, led by Jess Kehoe, who earned five aces, one assist and seven kills.
Also playing well for Moravia were McKenna Plumadore, who tallied five aces, three assists and one kill, Sarah Earl posted five aces and Karah Thomas finished with four aces.
FIELD HOCKEY
Auburn 3, Watertown 0
Abby Valentino posted two goals to lead the Maroons while Christine Desocio also chipped in a goal. Contributing one assist apiece were Breanna Handley and Stephanie Loyster. Sarah Reese had one save for Auburn.
