The Eagles earned the win despite keeping their No. 1 runner, Cody Stanton from competing - to keep him healthy for the Manhattan Invitational Saturday.
“Stanton had a bad cold, so he was kept out of the race to get well for this weekend's racing in New York City,” Jordan-Elbridge coach Roger Roman said. “If Cody had to race he would have, he knew that we would win the race without him.”
Although the Eagles won the race, Skaneateles' Calvin Davis finished first overall in 17:35, while Jordan-Elbridge took the third through ninth places running in a group, all finishing in 20:21.
Taking third place for the Eagles was first year varsity runner, Jack Gugel, Mike Marrero finished fourth, Greg Bader took fifth, Tom Poppe came in sixth, Derrick Cheney earned seventh, Mitch Alpha followed in eighth and Steve Slonosky finished in ninth.
Kyle Alpha came in 12th for the Eagles (20:25), Jared Bard finished in 19th (22:50) and Bill Direnzo rounded it out with a 20th place finish (22:50).
Skaneateles' Sam Kriever earned a 10th place finish in 20:51.
“A healthy Jordan-Elbridge boys team could win the state title,” Lakers coach Jack Reed said. “Roger Roman is the best motivator of any coach.”
In the girls' race, Skaneateles (4-2) swept the meet taking Jordan-Elbridge, 23-34 and beating Phoenix, 22-39.
Lakers eighth grader, Madeline Adams led the way for the team, finishing in second place overall with a time of 21:46, Courtney Pitman took fourth place in the best race of her life (22:21), Blair Gage came in fifth (22:26), Ellis Van Slyke earned ninth place (23:38) and Shannon Byrne finished in 10th place (23:39).
“We are getting better at a pretty quick pace,” Reed said.
Pacing the Eagles were Kim Foltz who ran in third (22:02), Phebe Alley came in sixth (22:37) and Jessica Salsbury ended up in eighth (23:04).
Skaneateles hosts Cazenovia and Christian Brothers Academy, who are running for the league title, Wednesday.
The undefeated Jordan-Elbridge boys team (6-0) will travel to the Manhattan Invitational Saturday and are anticipating next week's league championship race against state ranked Section III, Class B power and defending champion, Marcellus.
