Facing off against league rival Christian Brothers Academy, who stands in third place in the state rankings, second-ranked Jordan-Elbridge felt they had a score to settle.
“My boys had heard that Christian Brothers Academy thought they could run with them, and that they thought they matched up well against us,” Eagles coach Roger Roman said. “I think we had something to prove.”
Cody Stanton kept his undefeated record intact as he won the race with a course-record time of 16.25. Teammate Mike Marrero ran in second, running together with Stanton for the first mile and a half before pulling away and losing to Christian Brothers Academy's Tom Voorheis at the finish line in a vicious sprint. Marrero ended up in third (16.39). Greg Bader took fifth (17.10), Steve Slonosky was seventh (17.51), Mitch Alpha took ninth (18.03), Tom Poppe was 12th (18.16) and Jack Gugel ran 13th in his first-ever varsity race (18.35).
Jordan-Elbridge (4-0 division) travels to Rochester for the McQuaid Invitational Saturday.
