AURORA - The second annual Rustic Run was held at Camp Gregory in Aurora on Saturday, and the turnout was fantastic. The run is put on as a form of a fundraiser and to raise awareness of the camp.

Several participants start running in the second annual Camp Gregory Rustic Run along Cayuga Lake in Aurora on Saturday.
Chris Brozon, an organizer of the run, as well as a member of the Board of Directors for Camp Gregory, was happy with how the day went.

“Last year we had around 50 participants, this year we had close to 80, so that's a big difference,” she said, “Your hope is that every year it grows, and so we're keeping in line with that goal.”

Some of the competitors were made up from teams from local schools. Taking part in the run were members of the Southern Springs modified cross country team that is coached by Brozon, as well as the Southern Springs varsity cross country team and Southern Cayuga modified soccer team. Coaches Bill Mullarney and Greg Otis also helped organize the run.

The event featured two different runs, starting off with a one mile walk/run, followed by a five kilometer (1.3 mile) run.

Jessica Holden, a 13-year-old Genoa resident, won the blue ribbon for girls in the one mile race, with a 9:06 time. This was her first year running the course, but Holden kept her composure despite being a little nervous.

For the boys, 14-year-old Kyle Reilley, from the Southern Cayuga soccer team, ran the mile in 6:47 to win first place.

Shortly after the one mile runners crossed the finish line, the five kilometer runners made their way. The first place finisher for the girls in the five kilometer run was Lynda Bolloni. The 14-year-old ran the course in 23:04.

For the boys, Niagara University student and Southern Cayuga alum, Alex Schmitt won with a time of 20:05.

Each of the runners were in agreement that the most difficult part of the course was the hill at the end. The runners started at Honoco Road that runs along Cayuga Lake, making their way through Long Point State Park. From there they made their way back towards Camp Gregory's grounds.

Once runners make it to Lake Road, they face their biggest challenge of the course, a monstrous hill given the nickname the “Caspar climb challenge,” after Caspar Gregory, for whom the camp is named.

“That hill was...” Schmitt paused. “Normally I like hills, that one annoyed me.”

The scenic course, although not an easy one to run, was complimented by great weather.

Aside from being a little chilly, the sun was shining which was a change from last year's wet run.

Along the route, there were motivational signs that read “Run Faster” and “Dig Deeper.”

And finally along the final stretch, just after the “Caspar climb” was sign reading “You did it.”

There was a range in ages between the runners as age groups went from younger than 10 to 60 and over.

After the two races were over, everyone who took part met in the main lodge of the camp for snacks and drinks, and awards were given out to the participants.

Everyone involved really seemed to enjoy themselves, and it was apparent that Camp Gregory was a special place for a lot of people.

The camp is popular during the summertime for kids, providing five weeks of different programming and events. It is located on 300 feet of waterfront on Cayuga Lake.

The camp is also available for rent for several different occasions including weddings, reunions and vacations in general.

Last year, the Rustic Run raised $2,200, and this year they are hoping to exceed those numbers.

Brozon said the message they would like to send out from Camp Gregory and the Rustic Run is, “Get outside, be healthy, enjoy this great area that we live in and come have some fun.”
