JORDAN - It was slow going in the beginning, as it looked like it could be anyone's game as the Skaneateles girls soccer team led just 1-0 after the first half. But the Lakers took control in the second half and finished with a 5-0 win over Jordan-Elbridge Tuesday.

“It was a tough first half,” Lakers coach Lauren Wiese said. “We settled down a little in the second half, we knew we had to start being more patient, especially offensively. It helped finishing with that goal in the first half and we got our precision down better in the second half.”

The Lakers edged their rival Eagles in last season's visit, 2-1 giving Skaneateles reason to expect a close battle.

“It was a come from behind win on our part last year,” Wiese said. “So we knew it would be tough facing them, we always expect a good game against Jordan-Elbridge.”

The Lakers were also coming off a close, double overtime loss to Marcellus Friday, which kept their heads clear.

“It is always a battle between the top five in the league,” Wiese said. “We are trying to get our groove back and I think this game shows that we came back focused. Our game is a possession game and we try to dictate the pace, we did that tonight which made all the difference.”

The Eagles managed to put up a good fight in the first half, making it a defensive battle on the field and holding the Lakers off until the last few minutes before intermission. As the second half began, Skaneateles managed to post a goal within the first few minutes and kept the attack up after that.

“Our system broke down somewhat in the second half,” Jordan-Elbridge coach Al Maxian said. “In the first half we stayed very organized and played well but we got disorganized in the back after halftime, we mentally and tactically broke down a bit.”

Maxian has a young squad with six players that are just beginning their varsity experience, without a win on their record yet, they are looking to improve and for a chance at the playoffs.

“We are getting better every game,” Maxian said. “I couldn't be prouder of how they played the first half.”

Pacing the Eagles was Emily Dillon in the net, tallying 16 saves as Skaneateles topped J-E in both shots on goal (16-8) and in corner shots (6-1).

Amanda Gray led the Lakers scoring two goals, Grace Van der ven and Carly Davis both earned one goal and one assist, Maddy Morrissey posted one goal and Bridget Field added one assist while Erica Tardiff recorded one save.

“It was nice to come out with a win, we came back from the half relaxed and our defense played a great game,” Gray said. “Our defensive effort was the reason we got the shutout.”

Skaneateles (3-2) hosts Cazenovia Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Jordan-Elbridge (0-4) hosts Hannibal Thursday.
