AUBURN - A former student pleaded guilty in Cayuga County Court Thursday to calling in a bomb threat to Auburn High School while he was serving in-school suspension.
Shawn Parsons, 18, of 5 McConnell Ave., Auburn, admitted he used a telephone relay service for the hearing-impaired to call the school's office from a computer that he was using while serving his suspension on May 6.

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said Parsons was given suspension for skipping classes.

During his plea allocution, Parsons, who was a senior at the time, said he did not believe anyone would take the prank seriously and that he did not do it in order to be sent home early.

In exchange for pleading guilty to attempting to make a false report, a felony, Parsons was promised probation with credit for time served. Parsons has only spent one day outside of Cayuga County Jail since he was arrested on May 6.

Parsons may also be granted youthful offender status and could be eligible for enrollment into the county's felony drug court when he is sentenced on Oct. 22. Youthful offender status would seal Parson's conviction.

Budelmann said he would not oppose getting Parson's into the county's felony drug court to deal with any of his underlying substance abuse problems.

Parsons was originally enrolled in Auburn's drug court for a previous conviction, but was kicked out of the program before he could attend because he was charged with a felony for the bomb prank.

Only people charged with misdemeanors can participate in Auburn's drug court.
