The Skaneateles Aero Drome may receive more improvements in the next two seasons than it has received in three decades.
The Skaneateles Town Board has agreed to support Skaneateles resident Michael J. Falcone's plan to repair the receiving airport on Benson Road.
The renovation project received two state grants, but the money was held up after officials began to realize the state's financial situation was less buoyant than expected.
Designs call for repaving the landing strip. For a 600-foot stretch, crews will go beyond replacing asphalt and rebuild the deteriorated road's foundation. The project also includes a small drainage system along the runways' sides to improve the runoff conditions, according to Michael Lazar, who was before the board last week representing Falcone.
“We're getting it rejuvenated, renovated, what you would expect for an airport,” Lazar said.
He expects the undertaking will last three weeks, or a little more. They aim to complete the project this autumn, unless the state takes more time to distribute the money. Then, crews will start renovations in the spring.
