Our View: Hit & Misses

Thursday, September 3, 2009 11:50 PM EDT

HIT: To the recovery this week of the body of a man who had been missing and presumed drowned since July 25.
Dozens of police officers and firefighters from numerous agencies were joined by members of the community in the exhaustive search.

For the family of the victim, it has to be a relief that his body has been found and that he will be able to be given a proper burial.

We salute all those who worked so hard to bring some closure to this tragedy.

HIT: To the ongoing rehabilitation of the historic stone schoolhouse on the Union Springs High School campus.

It's great to see the 150-year-old building not only being saved but renovated in such a way that it will retain its original character.

When the work is complete, the building will once again be used for education, serving as a media center full of the latest technology.

MISS: To the accusation that a Fair Haven man falsely reported his boat had capsized on Lake Ontario during a fishing trip.

Police said the hoax was meant to somehow impress the man's girlfriend.

Rescuers put their lives on the line any time they have to go out on a body of water. A false report of this type is anything but impressive.

HIT: To the start of a new Syracuse University football season this Saturday when the Orange host the Minnesota Golden Gophers at the Carrier Dome.

Doug Marrone has waited a long time for the opportunity to coach his alma mater and he finally gets his chance. It may turn out to be yet another rebuilding season, but fans can hope that the team makes a good showing this season.

Also, don't forget, Auburn High School alum Nick Lepak is a reserve lineman for the Orange. Lets hope he sees some playing time and makes a contribution.
