Twenty-one to be exact.
That's how many runners the Doubledays left on base in their 6-4 loss in 11 innings, including two in scoring position in the 10th inning. Auburn left at least one runner stranded in every inning but the second, and the bases were left loaded in three separate innings. Auburn out-hit Batavia 14-10, but had three errors to the Muckdogs' one.
Auburn took an early lead when Lance Durham earned an RBI on a bases loaded walk to score Ryan Schimpf in the first inning off of Christopher Corrigan. Muckdogs catcher Ivan Castro tied the score on a Matt Adams single in the third, but Schimpf gave the lead back to Auburn in the fourth with an RBI single to score Markus Brisker.
It wasn't the first time Schimpf would have to get the Doubledays out of a pinch, after pitcher Zach Outman gave up a two-out RBI single to Conley in the top of the ninth, as Devin Goodwin seemed to score Batavia's winning run.
With Eric Eiland on via a single, Schimpf belted a triple down the right-field line with two outs to send the game into extra innings for the 10th time this season. But it wasn't enough as Auburn dropped to 1-9 in games that run past the ninth inning.
Auburn made another valiant rally effort in the bottom of the 11th, when Schimpf hit another extra base hit with two outs (a double) and eventually scored on a Sean Ochinko double. Josh Squatrino struck out Karim Turkamani swinging to end the marathon game.
