The body of a Syracuse man who drowned on Cross Lake in Cato on Saturday has been identified as Ambrose D. White Jr., state police said Sunday.
Troopers said White, 20, drowned in 16 feet of water when he jumped off a dock at the Cross Lake Marina onto a nearby tube which flipped over when he landed at 6:50 p.m.
Two of White's friends, who were on the tube when it flipped over, where unable to find White, troopers said.
White was found hours later by divers from the Baldwinsville and Fair Haven fire departments in the area where the tube flipped, troopers said.
William John, a general manager at the International House of Pancakes in Camillus, where White worked, said the tragedy shocked everyone at the restaurant
White was well liked among his coworkers and was always smiling and willing to help others, John said.
“Our hearts go out to his family,” he said. “I will always remember his smile, he was always smiling. No one ever had a problem with him and he was always willing to help out.”
White's body has been transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, police said.
Two men previously drowned on area lakes this summer. A man vacationing with his family at Owasco Lake drowned July 25 after jumping off a motorboat. His body has still not been found despite exhaustive searches in a widespread area of water near Scipio.
Another man drowned in Cayuga Lake Aug. 2 after falling out of a boat near the village of Cayuga.
His body was recovered by divers two days later.
