The rodeo at O'Brien's Farm and Stables in Moravia kicks through the gate Saturday afternoon. The event is in its third year, and while stable owner and rodeo organizer John O'Brien said many of the day's most popular attractions are returning, there are also a few changes he thinks will improve the event.
“You learn from your experiences the previous years,” O'Brien said earlier this week, “Every year, you try and improve things.”
The rodeo's main attractions will be the same. Those in the stands will be treated to barrel racing, bronco and bull riding and the popular mutton bustin' (sheep riding for children). O'Brien said he's also trying to keep a family-friendly atmosphere with reduced rates for children and free admission for anyone 5 years or younger.
The changes, though not major, are expected to help make for a smoother experience: food tickets for quicker lines, improved drainage for the arena, reversing the entrance chutes for a better view.
O'Brien also said some of the event's largest local sponsors will be showing products and displays throughout the day.
“I tried to get some stuff around here for people to look at while they're waiting for the rodeo to start,” he said.
This year's rodeo will likely feature some local faces in one competition. Though O'Brien organizes the entire event, the actual riders and ropers are part of a rodeo circuit that competes around the area. Some local barrel racers joined the circuit this year, O'Brien said, so they can ride in Cayuga County.
Between 1,100 and 1,200 showed up for last year's rodeo. O'Brien said the good weather helped bring people out, and he believes the weather will have a lot to do with the crowd size this weekend.
As of earlier this week, tickets were a little less than last year, he said.
“The way the summer's been, I think a lot of them are waiting for what the weather is going to do,” O'Brien said.
But he also has talked with a lot of people who are looking forward to what has become an annual event. People have been asking about this one for months, he said.
“They find out when it is and put it on their calendar,” O'Brien said.
