AUBURN - The Auburn Enlarged City School District Tuesday bid farewell to two district employees that played pivotal roles in curriculum and instruction.
During a special meeting Tuesday, the board of education accepted the resignation of Subject Area Supervisor Jeremy Dodds and school counselor Ski-Yaun Ware.
Dodds, who came to the district in 2004 as the supervisor for math and science curriculum - and later focused entirely on math - will go on to work for Johns Hopkins University, working on developing and implementing math curriculum in New York state schools, the first being Syracuse City Schools.
“What a terrific addition to our staff,” board member Dave Lansford said about Dodds, who aligned math curriculum horizontally through all district schools and vertically through all grade levels.
“It's also a compliment to Auburn in hiring such a highly qualified individual,” he later added.
The board later appointed Denise Hudson to a renamed position of director of mathematics and science to replace Dodds. Hudson, who last year served as an administrative intern in the subject area supervisor position for science, has been teaching science since 1996 and in Auburn since 2005, Superintendent JD Pabis said. Her last teaching post was at East Middle School.
Hudson is certified in administration, and has considerable education in math, Pabis said.
“Working with people,” he said, “she's going to be excellent. We know that already.”
Ware, on the other hand, was employed with the district for the last two years, working closely with the students involved in School Within A School, a program for ninth graders who may have difficulty adjusting to a large school setting and would benefit from more focused attention.
He has recently relocated his family to Texas, where he has relatives, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Jeff Pirozzolo said.
Board members Karol Soules and Lansford each commented on how important Ware was to School Within A School, and wondered what would happen to the program.
“I am so impressed with him,” Lansford said. “I thought he was such an asset here.”
Pabis said existing staff will absorb Ware's position, a move that wouldn't have much impact upon the students within the program. If there is a need for another counselor, Pabis said he would speak to the board at a future date.
In other news:
* The board will host a workshop at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building, 78 Thornton Ave., Auburn, to discuss board goals and evaluations.
* The next regular board meeting is slated for 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building.
