HIT: To a pair of celebrations that epitomized community spirit on Cayuga County's western border.
Both the village of Cayuga Waterfront Festival and the King Ferry Wheat Festival showcased family fun and neighborly togetherness.
Events like these don't take place without significant planning and coordination, as well as plenty of volunteering.
MISS: To more weekend tragedy in Cayuga County.
A week after a man drowned in Owasco Lake, a 50-year-old Seneca Falls man drowned in Cayuga Lake early Sunday morning. A few hours later, a 19-year-old Owasco woman was killed in a one-car automobile accident.
All of these cases have been handled by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, with help from a long list of other agencies. We thank all of them for the professionalism and compassion they have shown.
HIT: To the youth theater participants who worked together to produce a play about Harriet Tubman that was performed at the Auburn Public Theater over the weekend.
“Harriet Tubman Journey to Freedom” was a culmination of sorts for the APT's Children's Summer Theater Program. Nearly 50 local children portrayed the story of Tubman's life as an abolitionist and women's suffrage activist.
This program was a wonderful opportunity for children to learn not only about theater, but also about one of the most important figures in local history.
HIT: To Mike Lesch, who captured the 2009 Cayuga County Men's District Golf Tournament on Sunday.
Lesch's win at the Highland Park Golf Club in Sennett was impressive, shooting 211 over three days for a three-stroke advantage over runner-up Jack Weinerth. This year marked the third time Lesch has captured the district crown. He also won in 2001 and 2007.
