Mike Charles tossed 5 1-3 innings of no-hit baseball for the Auburn 12-year- old Little League All-Star team in its 6-3 win over Fredonia in the opening round of the Sectional tournament at Silver Creek Saturday.
Auburn plays Mel Ott today.
Charles had to be removed after he reached his 85-pitch count but the team kept the hits off of the board.
In the third inning, Hunter Charles opened the door for Auburn with a walk as he would advance to second on a passed ball and then to third with a Jack Burgmaster fielders choice to advance Hunter.
Hunter finally scored on a wild pitch as Auburn took the lead.
The bottom of the fourth is when Auburn opened up the game.
Justin Valentino led the inning off with a hit as Noah Christiantelli bunted him over and ended up being safe at first. Tommy Herbert then bunted again to load the bases.
“We played small ball in the fourth inning to beat them,” Coach Mike Charles said.
With one out, Kiernan Major scored a run on a fielders choice to make it 2-0. Matt Netti followed suit with a fielders choice and then on a full count, Trenton Ward hit a grand slam to score Herbert, Major and Netti.
They laid down four consecutive bunts allowing Fredonia to field the ball. Brandon Delf relieved Mike Charles to close out the game.
