Police are investigating the theft of jewelry, smoking paraphernalia and a drug that is growing in popularity with teenagers, from an Auburn business Wednesday morning, the Auburn Police Department said Thursday.
Police said 20 various colored glass smoking pipes, two tobacco grinders, 10 plated sterling silver necklaces and a substance called salvia divinorum were stolen from the Arizona Trader at 337 Genesee St.
Salvia is an herb that originated from Mexico and is considered to pose potential health risks to anyone that uses it, police said.
Little is known about the substance's long-term health risks.
The herb is often inhaled, Police said.
While the substance is currently legal in New York and is often available for purchase online or at smoke shops, legislation has been proposed to ban Salvia within the state due to its dangerous hallucinogenic affects, which can impair judgment and cognitive functions, police said.
Police urge parents to warn their children about the health risks associated with Salvia.
Police ask anyone with any information regarding the burglary to call the department at 253-3235 or Detective Christopher McLoughlin at 255-4706.
