Take me out to the ball game! The Auburn YMCA-WEIU Forever Fit class (also known as the Y-Ettes) had a wonderful day last Wednesday as they went to Casey Park for a picnic and then to the Auburn Doubledays game against the Oneonta Tigers, an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. I mention this only because my husband and I are one of the few local fans of the Detroit Tigers, so even though I supported our hometown Doubledays, I had to cheer a little for my husband's hometown team.
The Y-ettes had a wonderful time by Casey Park pool, where Dan Walter, our assistant aquatics director, cordoned off a special area for them by the pool. He also supplied us with a grill so we could cook our hot dogs and hamburgers. Members of the class supplied delicious dishes to pass and everyone was truly satisfied as they set off for the game, all with their new Auburn YMCA 150th Y-ette royal blue T-shirts. Julia Krueger made Y-ette blue and white pennants for everyone to wave at the game too.
The Doubledays staff took great care of everyone as they allowed them to go out on the field and participate in the kids# games. Sophie Renahan, Betty Thurston, Jean Clark, Nancy Kowan and Julia Krueger participated in the musicals chairs competition. They were probably the highlight of the game as they fought with each other for a chair. Betty ended up winning, however Jean Clark accused her of cheating and pushing her. It was all in good-hearted fun, but they, as well as the fans, enjoyed that event greatly!
Thanks to the Doubledays staff for allowing our group to participate.
The score was 0-0 when I left in the bottom of the fifth but the ladies stayed until the end and I think there was a little more action on the field with some runs being scored.
Everyone wore their shirts to class the following day. There were lots of pictures and talk of doing the whole thing again sometime this summer.
Both Casey Park and our own pools at the YMCA have been extremely busy with the summer weather getting better. Last week, we were also working in conjunction with the Doubledays to run our first baseball camp of the season. This one was very successful and the next one will start Aug. 5. If any child is interested in baseball, this is a great learning camp as well as an opportunity to meet some of the Auburn Doubledays.
There is a YMCA-WEIU Membership Appreciation night at the Doubledays' Aug. 5 game against the Vermont Lake Monsters.
Visit the YMCA membership desk for a form to order your tickets with the Auburn Doubledays. You may also purchase your tickets at the Doubledays office. Remember to present your YMCA membership card. The deadline to get tickets is two days before the game.
When you order your tickets, you will also receive a 10 percent discount off merchandise.
Wouldn't it be great to have all of our YMCA members from Auburn fill the seats at an Auburn Doubledays game.
