After a 7-6 victory Monday, ACF needed one more win to take the best-of-three series. But Tuesday's game went extra innings and had to be postponed due to time restrictions. So the game picked up in the eighth inning Wednesday, and ACF picked up a quick run and the title.
“It was a real battle,” ACF coach Al Siracusa said. “Both championship games were decided by only one run so it was no easy win.”
By the fifth inning of the championship game, ACF had a solid 9-4 lead over Angelo's but surrendered the lead in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, ACF broke a 9-9 tie, scoring twice to take an 11-9 lead before Angelo's once again tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
The two runs for Angelo's came off a Trent Ward double. Angelo's nearly scored the game-winner but ACF's Matt Faiola connected with catcher Justin Valentino to throw out a runner at home.
After Connor Siracusa scored the go-ahead run when the game picked up, Teddy Herbert closed out the win on the mound for ACF.
Faiola had seven strikeouts and Herbert tallied five strikeouts, Herbert led the way offensively with three hits. Faiola, Valentino and Shane Lawrence each contributed two hits and Kiernan Major tripled and doubled.
Ward led the Angelo's offense with a double and a triple, while Joe Tozzi slugged a home run and Kevin DiCola finished with three hits.
On the mound for Angelo's, Dan Carter finished with four strikeouts and Trent Lawrence recorded two strikeouts.
Auburn Correctional Facility finish the season 18-2 overall. Team members include Shane Lawrence, Max Pinchak, Matt Faiola, Justin Valentino, Kiernan Major, Connor Siracusa, Ted Herbert, Pat Deluca, Jordan Anthony and Andrew Kopec. The coaching staff includes Al Siracusa, Dave Siracusa and Steve Deluca.
