HIT: To the New York Dance Festival, which started this week and includes the Thommie Walsh Song and Dance Man Gala, Night of 1,000 Drums, a dance concert and a musical theater presentation.
The three-week festival draws people with a variety of talents to Auburn, and it's a great opportunity for local fans of music and dance to be able to see top caliber performances right in their backyard.
MISS: To the theft of a gas grill from Mercy Apartments in Auburn, but a HIT to the number of people who offered to help afterward.
The senior citizens who reside at Mercy pooled their money over eight months to be able to purchase a grill, but then the grill was stolen.
After the theft was reported in The Citizen, several people offered to donate cash toward the purchase of a new grill or donate one outright.
On Thursday, police recovered the stolen grill, and someone dropped a new one off at the complex.
We weren't the least bit surprised - but quite proud nonetheless - to see the community respond so generously in this case.
HIT: To the annual MASH camp put on by Auburn Memorial Hospital.
The two-day Medical Academy of Science and Health offers area eighth- and ninth-graders a chance to explore a variety of specialties within the health-care industry. Perhaps some of the 22 students who participated this year will be inspired to become professionals in this important field.
HIT: To Skaneateles resident Mason Drastal, who is using an old-fashioned approach to attending college. The American University student is making and selling his own cookies to raise money to pay for his tuition and room and board.
What a novel (and great tasting) way to put one's self through college. Heck, selling cookies has helped the Girl Scouts raise money for decades, so why can't it work for a college student?
