The Bocheneks, who have been involved in DockDogs competition for five years, hosted the Fire on the Dock event this weekend, with two days of qualifying wrapping on Saturday. The championship will be decided today.
The Bocheneks expected 300 dogs on their property this weekend, which includes a dock and pool for the Big Air, Speed Retreat and Extreme Vertical competitions. The Big Air measures a long jump, the Speed Retreat is a time trail and the Extreme Vertical is a high jump. Winners are crowned in each category.
Chessie, the Bochenek's Chesapeake Bay retriever, sparked their interest in DockDogs when he used to leap into the lake to go for a swim. That was five years ago. Today, Charlie and Dolores have an RV for their dogs and frequently compete in DockDogs events all over the country.
“We travel all over the United States and Canada,” Charlie said.
And the dog owners have also formed their own community, as they set up camp with each other every weekend.
