USSA -- United Socialist States of America

If anyone knows the history about the brick home on Owasco Road that is being demolished, I would certainly like to read about it.

Forget (foreign cars), buy American! They might be that great on gas mileage, but they're better made by Americans!

Auburn police chief said it again --- he can't enforce the alternate parking. He says there are only five officers on a shift, times three shifts equals 15 officers --- out of 70 police officers -- so is he telling us the rest of the people are administrative or detectives?

OK then. "

" I just commented on the article about Mercy Apt. seniors who had their grill stolen...
as small as this paper is, why wasnt this printed the day after it happened?

on another note: I have to agree with Nature!
how much debating can you do on the same subjects,POLITICS and Religion?
we basically all know where we stand on the subjects, as for Karl, or myself, our views on it will never change!

sometimes we debate here, without name calling, sometimes we don't.
sometimes we just take a break from it all and simply chat, as we have been the past few days.

For me, I love the history of Auburn, so finding out loads of info is awesome!
especially since my parents and grandparents are all deceased!

last year I bought a book, that YOU fill on about YOUR LIFE...I want my kids/grandkids to know where I was and what I did, and things that were important to me.

Some places that were mentioned here, I had totally forgotten about.
So thanks everyone, for adding to my book!

something just hit me!!...I am the 3rd oldest person in my family alive today!
I best go color my hair! lol "

By not publishing Two Cents in the print edition, they've really all but cut off cross-communication between the online readers and the print readers of the paper.

" In the northwest corner of Illinois, is a town called Galena. It is on the Galena River, which flows into the Mississippi River. This town is the home of Ulysses S. Grant. Back before the Civil War, this town was booming. Riverboats came up the Mississippi and Galena Rivers. Then, during the war the town mined lead for war ammo. This caused the river to silt up and the town went bust. People were so poor that there was no new construction. All the original buildings/homes remained. Today, it is once again a booming town. People fixed up the old buildings; turned many into bed and breakfasts; there is golf, shopping, historic tours. So they went from riches to rags and back to riches. Doesn't this sound like Auburn (except the back to riches part)? Auburn has so much potential. A revival of Auburn is possible. "

" Yes, FG, all the things I have mentioned are from the late 50s and early 60s. By the mid-60s things really started changing. Before then, I never even heard of anyone doing illegal drugs. I'm sure it was different in Detroit during those years, but the bad stuff hadn't hit Auburn yet, as far as I know. Thank God I was out of high school before that all started. Also, remember that the drinking age in NYS back then was 18. A HUGE right of passage was turning 18 and being allowed to enter the Sunset on Division Street. That was the happenin' place - standing room only some nights. Okay, folks, here is another blast from the past: Who remembers a place around 63-64 called the Jazz Barn? I think it was in Onondaga County; maybe near Skaneatlas? It was a converted farmer's barn. They played live Dixieland jazz; we all parked in a cow pasture and it was always packed. One night the mayor of Syracuse showed up; we all thought that was quaint - an old guy LOL. "

" It's interesting to read of the old times in Auburn. It sounds like the sense of community was not yet dead -- I am guessing these reminiscences are from an era in the 50s, 60s, 70s?

Growing up in suburban suburbia outside Detroit in the 60s, 70s, 80s -- we had no such thing. There was no "downtown" in Redford, no place where all the kids hung out -- a few here, a few there, but mostly just at each others houses. Almost none of us took the 2-3 bus trip to get downtown Detroit -- nothing there to see or do anyway and might inconvenient to get there. I never went out drinking, I never went out dancing (except school dances) -- I didn't know kids who did either. Some drank or did drugs, to be sure, but again, it was always at somebody's house or off in an alley or something. Some kids went rollerskating, some went ice skating (a lot of kids played hockey in the Detroit area). Some, like me, did a lot of sports, both at school and in community leagues. A lot of kids went to big rock concerts (I didn't), but mostly, despite being a major US city, there wasn't much to do and there definitely was not the sense of community, not at all.

You all had something. It may be lost today, but you had it to lose, which is more than many other cities in this country had in the same time period. "

I remember beautiful lawns, kept up homes, and lots of flowers, with the smell of Italian cooking all along the route.
With friendly folks saying hi, or just waving as I strolled by.

I WOULD NEVER ALLOW MY KIDS TO WALK THRU THERE TODAY!

My last visit, as I dropped a letter in the mailbox at the Psot Office, I watched a drug deal in plain daylight on the corner!

The city is at fault for not adding better laws, or enforcing the laws they have in place.
The police are at fault for NOT arresting in that area on a daily basis!
The landlords are at fault, for only wanting a monthly check, NOT upstanding caring citizens to live in their apartments!
The citizens of Auburn are at fault for NOT protesting and demanding that something be done NOW!

I feel the only time something will finally be done in that area, is when a innocent child is killed...watch agencies/officials/police/citizens scramble then!

my wish is for all to wake up NOW before the horrific happens later! "

Then I have one who likes to go out for a few minutes, then turns around and wants in hysterically. That's good, because he has a talent for getting locked in places. Finally there is the fat cat, who will go out to sit on the porch for a little while once in a blue moon.

I also got over to Farmer Guy's, where I did a kitty count and was able to count all 15 cats. One of the semi-feral cats (one we haven't been able to catch and have fixed yet) called her kittens out to see me -- must be about 6 weeks old and cute as can be -- 4 of them -- 2 black with white, one white with black and one gray and white. Her sister, who is more feral, has 5 little ones about 2 1/2 months old, and also very cute. One of them has been coming up to the porch to check out the people -- I hope to tame as many of these two litters as possible in hopes of getting the fixed and maybe even finding homes. But if they stay wild, there's no chance of either. The past few litters, the females all got picked off, so we have a preponderance of feral males. Too much breeding is bad enough, but too much inbreeding is really awful.

With half an acre (smallest yard on the block!) I'd have to spend my entire free time mowing if it were to be done every 3-4 days! Or pay a fortune, since I don't yet own a mower. It's also very, very uneven, full of holes, high and low spots -- can't see me paying to bulldoze it and start over, which is the only way you'd get it even enough to control the length the grass were cut. The guy who does it has a riding mower and some places he hits dirt (I hate that), while others remain quite long. No matter -- I still think it is a very "nice lawn" -- no weed and feed, no chemicals or poisons to make my pets or wild animals sick, nor even organic treatments -- it is what it is, and I say it is more lovely than any of those unnaturally square, uniformly colored and pristine "weed"-free sod lawns on my block growing up.

You should see some of the truly lovely bits of lawn I see in Ithaca every day on my way home -- there are quite a few people there on Aurora St who have given over their lawns to all wild plants and they are really remarkable -- no mowing, no chemicals, no weeding, nothing -- just wild flowers and plants. " Having previously been accused of playing loose with the figures, here's a part of an article from AP today.

"WASHINGTON -- Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Obama's top domestic priority.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.

In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties.

Called "shared responsibility payments," the fines would be set at least half the cost of basic medical coverage, according to the legislation.

In 2008, employer-provided coverage averaged $12,680 a year for a family plan, and $4,704 for individual coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation's annual survey. Senate aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the cost of the federal plan would be lower but declined to provide specifics."

Now Obama is considering taxing health care benefits from work related health insurance. A TAX ON THE MIDDLE CLASS. "

There is no need for chemicals whatsoever unless you are obsessed that grass must be unnaturally forced to be perfectly uniform in color and height, and that a lawn must be utterly homogenous with no variation in the plants growing in it.

If that's the case, you would have fit right in with the lawn-obsessed suburbanites where I grew up -- one couple down the street had a screaming fight one evening because the wife's father had berated the husband for not having the most perfectly green lawn (all sod) on the block. She was upset with her husband and in tears over it!

And did our neighbors hate us! From our house on one corner, to our friends house at the other end, all these twinkies had cut down all the trees "so they didn't have to rake leaves" -- well, we had lots of trees, and those nervy little leaves would blow into THEIR yards! As would the seeds from the dandelions, and the crabcrass!

But come hot, dry weather, our yard was still green, while the rest were out there frantically watering their lawns to try to save it from the sun.

Phooey -- unless you live on a golf course, there's nothing wrong with some variety in the lawn, and no need for chemicals -- I doubt if we have even scratched the surface of the negative health and environmental impacts of all the many destructive chemicals to which we are daily exposed from youngest childhood -- and our pets (and wild animals) as well. If you prefer a car manufactured by a foreign-owned manufacturer, that's fine too, especially since you are probably helping keep Americans at work in that foreign companies American auto plants.

But for goodness sake, pick your car based on your needs and preferences -- there's no point trying to buy an "American-made" car -- no such thing any more. "
