AUBURN - The Auburn school district board of education is comfortable in its skin as it unanimously re-elected Charles Cator as board president and Sam Giangreco as vice president for the upcoming term.
Each position is a one-year term with a maximum of three terms.
Cator said he had achieved his primary goal, set last year when he was first elected president - to improve communication between the board and the community and he expects that to carry over this year.
While the board had set out to hold three community forums, they succeeded in holding four. He expected to hold at least three more this year, one in October and two in the spring, with the possibility of a fourth.
Parents and staff mainly attend these forums, Cantor said, with the third session the best attended. He attributed this to a newspaper story saying people weren't showing up.
“We set the bar last year,” Cator said, “and we need to raise it.”
He expects the board to do more outreach as a group.
“We can make a difference,” he said.
He noted the improvement in attendance and in test scores as the board worked together with principals and staff and said working together on policies can raise the percentages even higher.
He said the district is trying to get parents more involved.
Cator said it was different being elected president than first being elected to the board.
“I learned a lot from the first year about how the system works and the responsibilities of being president,” he said. “Being vice president is a very good stepping stone to becoming president.”
Giangreco, elected to his second term as vice president, said he was pleased.
“We have a good school district, and I'm very proud of it,” he said. “I'm honored to work with these people. They absolutely care about children.”
While there's a lot more to do, Giangreco said he works well with Cator. He said he would eventually like to become president.
In other news:
* On July 7, two committee meetings will take place at district offices in the Harriet Tubman Administration Building on Thornton Avenue. At 5 p.m., the policy committee will meet, with representatives from solar and wind energy presenting. At 7 p.m., the board self-evaluation committee will also meet.
