All over the county, residents will be scrambling for a view of the local fireworks' red, white and blue hues during this year's Independence Day celebrations.
In Fair Haven and Emerson Park, the night sky will be lit up in a vivid explosion of colors while the nearby lakeshores will be illuminated by a ring of fire.
On Owasco Lake, Norma Leone, a co-chair of Owasco Lake Day, said the Owasco Watershed Lake Association is asking lake-side residents to display LED lights just prior to the fireworks at Emerson Park.
Leone said the display mirrors an American Indian tradition, and is often done on other Finger Lakes in celebration of Independence Day.
“Many lakes call it the ring of fire,” Leone said. “We were told it was started by the Senecas. It's a tradition that celebrates the lake and prepares for the upcoming season. When you get everybody doing it, it looks like a ring of fire surrounding the lake.”
On Lake Ontario, Fair Haven will have a similar event on their bay prior to the fireworks.
Once the thousands of spectators get situated, Sam Hanford, who is with Fair Haven's Save Our Fourth Association, said $9,000 worth of fireworks will be launched into the sky over the bay.
“It's just non-stop fireworks for 25 minutes,” Hanford said. “People can see it from anywhere around the bay. It's a very big and very good show.”
The fireworks will be the grand finale of a three-day July 4 celebration, which includes a car show, three parades and a carnival.
The Mile Long Parade down Main Street is expected to draw nearly 5,000 people, Hanford said, in addition to those who want to see the children's parade and the boat parade.
For the children's parade, Hanford said local children will decorate their bikes or wagons and march down to the carnival to enjoy the events games and rides.
In Emerson Park, visitors can enjoy the patriotic marches of John Philip Sousa and other composers when the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra prepares visitors for the park's fireworks display. The fireworks will follow immediately after the orchestra's finale, the 1812 Overture by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
While the ring of lights on Owasco Lake will be a new addition this year, Leone said she hopes it becomes a part of the tradition in conjunction with the fireworks.
“This is the start of summer, and this is how people celebrate it,” Leone said. “(The lights) will create a sense of unity with this big circle of lights bringing people together. It will be very impressive, and it will show support for our lake and our community.”
