There will be a little less and a little more to do this year at the Cayuga County fair.

The annual agricultural festivities begin today at the fairgrounds in Weedsport and will take place through the weekend. Though economic factors have meant a handful of features will be absent this year, many favorites - and a few new events - are there for prospective fairgoers.
“Our main goal (as organizers) is to have the community come to the fair and be welcome,” said Brandi Feocco, vice president of the county fair board.
Like in past years, there will be games and rides, food, music and demonstrations all weekend. There will also be the floral and baby contest, as well as a talent competition. And Feocco said many of the animal exhibits, which include goats, cows and sheep, have either the same amount or more animals this year compared to last.
“I think we're pretty much on schedule right now,” said Feocco, who added that the animals are expected to arrive Wednesday.
Unfortunately, there have been a few small downgrades, she said. The usual draft horse show is now a draft horse pull and demonstration on Saturday. And the annual alpaca show this year is a smaller alpaca display.
But the fair will have a couple more activities for baking enthusiasts. For the young cooks, there will be a youth cookie contest for original recipes. There will also be an apple pie contest for the adults.
The winners of each will have their recipes on display throughout the fair, Feocco said.
“We're just starting out small, but we're going to expand (the baking competition) next year,” she said. “Maybe we'll do a cookbook or something like that.”
Like last year, both parking and admission are free to the fair.
Though the days leading up to the big event have been soggy, Feocco said organizers have been able to keep the setup on schedule. There's plenty enough work to go around to bring it inside when the drops are falling and outside when the sun is out.
She should know the routine. After all, Feocco and her father, Bill Faulkner, have been working on the Cayuga County fair for 15 years.
“We do it so that my kids can have the same kinds of experiences I had when I was younger,” Feocco said.
