HIT: To the dedication celebration held in Summer Hill on Saturday for the new pavilion at the Millard Fillmore birth site.
The pavilion, a gift from Nucor Steel, is the latest improvement at the site in recent years. We're glad to see efforts being made to highlight this remarkable historical connection for southern Cayuga County.
This pavilion will likely entice more people to stop by the site, and in the process they're likely to learn a little more about the only Cayuga County native to become a U.S. president.
MISS: To Bernard Madoff, who has been sentenced to 150 years in prison for his massive investor fraud scheme.
We're pleased Madoff is being punished for his crimes, but that doesn't help rebuild the lives he has ruined through his greed.
The Associated Press reported that Madoff at various times during Monday's sentencing referred to his fraud as a “problem,” an “error of judgment” and a “tragic mistake.” Those references might all be technically accurate, but they don't come close to conveying the scale of this crime.
HIT: To the fishing day for grandparents and grandchildren hosted Friday by the Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery.
It was wonderful to see the smiles on participants' faces at this unique family activity.
Hopefully, the day at the hatchery will inspire some more trips to a pond, lake, river or stream in the near future for these grandparent/grandchild tandems.
HIT: To everyone involved in the Owasco Flyer bicycle race held last weekend in Cayuga County.
The athletes who competed, the spectators who gave them support and the organizers who made it all possible should all feel good about being part of this successful community event.
