BUFFALO -- The last remnants of Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium are coming down.
The final piece of the nearly 70-year-old downtown arena is being demolished Tuesday. Demolition of the former home of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres began earlier this year.
The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. is demolishing the Aud to make way for a Bass Pro Shops store and other projects along the city's Lake Erie waterfront.
A ceremony is planned for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a time capsule sealed in the building in 1939 will be opened. The Aud opened the following year.
The building hosted hockey and basketball games, circuses, rock concerts and other events during the 56 years it was open.
The arena closed in 1996, when the Sabres moved to their new home at nearby HSBC Arena.
