That point came in the bottom of the fifth inning Friday night, when the Auburn Doubledays took advantage of some sloppy State College play and scored two runs to close the gap to 5-4 in favor of the Spikes.
Auburn's comeback attempt fell way short, however, when the Spikes' bats woke up and the Doubledays spent a chunk of their pitching staff in the team's 10-4 loss at Falcon Park.
State College scored in every inning after the fourth and after taking an early 4-0 lead in the first, it was too much for the Doubledays to ultimately overcome.
In his second start of the season, Doubledays starter Scott Gracey had a rough first inning and suffered his second loss on the mound. Similar to his first outing in Batavia when he allowed five runs on four hits, Gracey gave up five straight hits and four runs in the first inning. He settled in
after that, allowing just two walks and one hit in the rest his 4 2-3 innings of work. Auburn sent out four more pitchers, including Willy Mendez, who gave up three runs and David Miller and Zach Outman, who both allowed one score.
Two Doubledays' errors also helped the Spikes' offensive explosion, which included 11 hits - four of them for extra bases. Shortstop Andy Vasquez paced the Spikes with three hits.
A couple of State College errors by left fielder Jose Hernandez led to two Doubledays runs. Auburn managed six hits, but was unable to take advantage of many of them, stranding as many base runners. Randy Schwartz provided the Doubledays with their first home run at Falcon Park this season, with a solo shot to left-center field in the second inning. Schwartz leads the New York-Penn League with four homers this season, but has managed just five total hits so far.
Auburn's most consistent hitters were shut out on Friday night when Jon Fernandez and Jack Murphy were a combined 0-for-7. Shortstop Jimmy Gonzalez was the only multi-hitter for Auburn, with two hits, including a bunt single.
State College's second pitcher Nelson Pereira picked up his first win of the season in just 1-3 of an inning of work, since starter Richard Paulino lasted just 4 2-3. Auburn (3-4) hosts State College today for the rubber match of the three game series.
