The Auburn Doubledays are always trying to keep the stands filled, and to do that they make some offers that you just can't refuse.
“We really like doing these giveaways and special theme days,” Doubledays General Manager Carl Gutelius said. “We like to keep our fans happy and have lots of fun at the games.”
In effort to try and find some new ideas in his 10th season with the Doubledays, Gutelius said they have decided to go with a Civil War theme for the park for the entire season. The Doubledays are named after Abner Doubleday, who fired the first shots to defend Fort Sumter at the beginning of the war.
In order to honor Doubleday, Auburn Doubledays employees will have ranks attached to their name tags, wear Civil War-style hats and there will be a cannon at the park for special home run celebrations.
Falcon Park will also be renaming the souvenir shop “Abner's Souvenir Depot” and the concession stand will be the commissary.
Another new Doubleday weekly treat will be that every Tuesday is Fat Tuesday. For one price, fans can purchase a wristband that enables them to get all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, popcorn and soda. On Wednesday nights, the Doubledays will be having Wayback Wednesdays, celebrating all the decades beginning with the 1950s, going to the 1990's.
Wayback Wednesdays will include decade theme costume contests, music and even the employees will be dressed as blasts from the past.
“Those will be really fun nights and everyone can get involved,” Gutelius said. “That is what we are aiming for, we want to bring in people of all ages and make sure it is fun for everyone.”
Unfortunately the harsh economic times have forced a change for Dollar Thursdays. Hot dogs, beer, soda, peanuts and programs will still be only one dollar, but admission will be full price.
“The cost of everything is going up every year,” Gutelius said. “It is unfortunate but we have to do it to survive.”
Here are some dates to mark on your calendar:
June 20
Opening night will include a postgame fireworks display. Fans who make it out to the first home game of the season will also be treated to a poster schedule.
June 29
The first Bingo Monday of the season and also a Fingerlakes Bottling Magnet Schedule giveaway at the gate.
“Everyone loves to come out and play bingo,” Gutelius said. “It is a lot of fun and anyone can play, it has become a tradition here at Falcon Park.”
July 15
The first Wayback Wednesday and free general admission tickets for Tompkins Trust Company Community Night. The costume that best captures the 1950s era will win a prize in the costume contest.
“Everyone can come out in their poodle skirts and leather jackets and just have a good time,” Gutelius said. “It'll get silly and that is when it gets fun.”
July 29
One of the most popular souvenirs to be given away at Falcon Park has to be the bobbleheads. This season the first bobblehead to be given at the gate will be that of Adam Lind, former 2004 Auburn Doubleday and current designated hitter and left fielder for the Toronto Blue Jays. This night will also be a Wayback Wednesday with the 1960s theme.
August 4
What better way to decorate your home than with a photo of your favorite team? That is the idea as the Doubledays partner with Hillside to give every fan a team photo.
August 5
It will be a race to the gate as the first 500 fans will receive a coffee mug courtesy of the Coffee Host, while the kids can find some extra enjoyment at the game with some Auburn Party Rental inflatable games.
August 8
One thing that has been a staple in the sport is the popularity of baseball cards for collectors and children alike. The Doubledays will be giving the first 750 fans a 2009 Auburn Doubledays card set to go with their collection or start a new one.
August 9
The first 600 fans through the Falcon Park gates will receive a collectible Doubledays lapel pin.
“There may not be a championship ring to celebrate with this season but we decided that Dennis Holmberg himself should be celebrated and so we will be giving out pins with his number 35 on it for Holmberg night,” Gutelius said.
August 26
Making sure everyone is included in the fun at the games, the Doubledays will hold a Hillside Family Night with free tickets for children ages 12 and under who are accompanied by an adult. There will also be face painting, balloon animals and lots more family fun activities at the game along with the 1980s theme for Wayback Wednesday.
August 29
Just in case you want to play your own at-home version of Doubledays baseball, the team will be giving out baseballs with the Doubledays logo on them to the first 600 fans through the gate.
August 31
The second bobblehead to add to your collection will be from the Auburn Firefighters Benevolent Association and will be an Abner Firefighter bobblehead.
“They are really cute, we just got to see what they look like,” Gutelius said. “We will be giving out about 1,000 of them, so hopefully everyone will get to go home with one.”
