We're glad to see that the Brutus Town Board and World Racing Group were able to work out all the necessary details to allow a July 10 concert to be held at the Cayuga County Fairgrounds.
Since concert organizers had failed to meet the town's timeline for applying for a public assembly permit, the board had initially voted against the application. But the two sides got together again this week and town board members, satisfied that traffic and public safety issues had been addressed, agreed to make an exception.
The town board was right to turn down the concert application when its members had too many unanswered questions. The concert promoters simply failed to complete the paperwork properly.
But the board was also right to waive the local law that stood in the way once it became clear that any issues regarding public safety had been OK'd by local law-enforcement agencies.
We certainly understand the concerns people in the Weedsport area might have about traffic and rowdy behavior, given that the fairgrounds were for many years the site of an annual all-day rock concert that drew crowds often top heavy with binge drinkers.
But we're pleased that Brutus officials haven't allowed some negatives of the past to turn them against the idea of Weedsport ever hosting a concert again.
If anything, country singer Tracy Lawrence, well-known for his 2007 hit “Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” is probably a good fit for this area, and we don't expect an overly rowdy crowd.
In the end, it's a win-win situation for the town and World Racing Group.
We hope this turns out to be a pleasant evening of music that doesn't cause too much of a nuisance for homeowners near the fairgrounds.
If it does, there's no reason that the fairgrounds shouldn't continue to be used as a concert venue.
