Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To Rachel Stanton, who won the inaugural Pay It Forward contest organized by this newspaper and put in considerable work to pull off a great tribute to area crossing guards.
The contest, supported by sponsorship from the Reva Rollerdrome and Hiscock & Barclay law firm, asked readers to come up with an idea for how they would use $250 to benefit the community. The catch was the winner had to then actually take that money and execute the idea.

Stanton eagerly accepted the challenge, and her efforts culminated with special ceremonies in Moravia and Auburn last week.

MISS: To the rain showers that forced the opening home game for the Auburn Doubledays to be postponed.

Many of us were eagerly anticipating the return of minor league baseball for another season at Falcon Park with last Saturday marked on the calendar. But a day filled with steady rain washed those plans out, and thanks to a schedule that has the Doubledays on the road the first half of this week, the home opener now will take place Thursday.

For local baseball fans, that night can't come fast enough.

HIT: To the annual Prison City Ramblers Father's Day Car Show held Sunday at Emerson Park.

This tradition is a perfect fit for Father's Day. The proof could be seen in the hundreds of families who poured into the park to share some togetherness with Dad.

We'd also be remiss if we didn't give kudos to the many community Father's Day breakfasts and barbecues held throughout the area. So to all involved in organizing and volunteering for these events, we say thanks.

MISS: To reports of more burglaries of Auburn businesses.

The Auburn Police Department confirmed last week it has a new round of break-ins to investigate, following reports of a pair of similar burglaries last month.
