WEEDSPORT - Baldwinsville's Jimmy Phelps took advantage of race leader Jeff Brownell Jr.'s rear flat tire with 10 laps to go to go, then held off Ryan Phelps and Matt Sheppard to pick up the 35-lap DIRTcar Big Block Modified win Sunday night at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
Other winners Sunday night were Steve Gray in the DIRTcar Sportsman, Dave Mannise in the DIRTcar Street Stocks, Jim Cronin in the Street Stox and Lance Albanese in BattleKarz.
Behind Jimmy Phelps, Sheppard, Ryan Phelps, Steve Paine and Alan Johnson rounded out the top five.
“We got the monkey off our back, we've been struggling here, not so much here, but everywhere,” Phelps said. “What are you going to do? We caught some breaks tonight, had a good enough car to get out front and stayed there.”
In the Sportsman, Dave Marcuccilli, Tom Juhl, Chris Hile and last week's winner Marcus Dinkins completed the top five behind Gray.
“It's definitely not easy out there, we picked the wrong gear tonight and drove the wheels off it,” Gray said. “That M1 (Dave Marcuccilli) is a phenomenal driver, he was smooth as can be. The only way we were going to win it was if I slid up and took his lane, that's what we did and got the job done.”
Mannise won the Street Stocks and was followed by Mike Welch, Nathan Peckham, Chris Fisher and Frank Burnell.
