Rash of break-ins reported in Auburn

The Auburn Police Department is currently investigating a recent rash of burglaries at local businesses.
According to the APD, at least six locations -- mostly restaurants -- have either been broken into or had suspicious broken windows within approximately the last week. Investigators say there is not definitive evidence linking the incidents, but APD Lt. Shawn Butler said it's possible the crimes are related.

"We're not 100 percent sure, but it's very suspicious," Butler said Friday. "We're trying to beef up the patrols in the area."

The APD confirmed that Lasca's on Grant Avenue, Daut's on East Genesee Street and the Auburn Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on East Genesee Street were either broken into or had suspicious window breaks during overnight hours last week.

According to the APD, Kostas on Grant Avenue was broken into during overnight hours between Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Me Old Mans news stand on North Division Street was hit during overnight hours between Wednesday and Thursday.

Butler said the perpetrators in most of the cases seem to be looking for money, though cash was not necessarily stolen in every instance.

No one has been arrested in connection with these investigations, but Butler said detectives do have some active leads. Anyone with information related to these crimes are asked to contact the APD at 255-3235.

Last month, the APD announced two other burglaries at downtown restaurants. In both instances, the thieves took undisclosed amounts of cash.

The names and locations of the businesses were not disclosed at the owners' requests.

" Have you watched the news....if kids attack you and you defend yourself....YOU'RE the one arrested. you supposed to let them mug you and just say 'uncle'. How could you grow up near Auburn and end up in it? That's backwards! I'll never live there...ever. "

" I moved out of Auburn just about a year ago...best move i've ever made! What a trash hole that city's become. Sad.. I grew up all around Auburn and the surrounding area, and it's a shame what it's turned into now. Get the 'trash' off the streets, and get Auburn back to what it used to be ! People, stand up for your rights, and dont let these punks rule the city! If you take a walk..carry a bat, stick, anything you need to, to protect yourself. Keep cell phones handy, and if you can, use your cell phone cameras ! If citizens blow in enough punks..they'll get fed up, and 'move on'. "
