A Syracuse-based child care resource and referral agency will be expanding into Cayuga County by early July to replace the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes, which will be closing at the end of the month.
Child Care Solutions, which provides information and resources to parents, employers and community members in Onondaga County who seek solutions to child care needs, accepted an offer from the state Office of Family and Child Services Wednesday to give people in Cayuga County those same opportunities.

"We want to express our excitement about having this opportunity and learning about Cayuga County, and really figuring out how to be the best child care resource and referral agency we can there," Executive Director Peggy Liuzzi said.

Liuzzi said she and her staff have been working "double-time" to ensure a smooth transition of services in a very short timespan.

The Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes, which serves Seneca and Cayuga counties, recently decided that it would close June 30.

Tax returns from 2006 and 2007 show the council had two straight operational loses, in fiscal 2007-08 totally more than $50,000.

" I am sorry that Canalwoman never used the CCCFL for any of her Day Care needs. The Council provides/provided more than 80 hours of inexpensive training in the past year so child care providers could complete their required trainings in the nine topic areas. (Cayuga Home Day Care Assoc. provided 15,) Additionally personalized training was offered at providers convenience.
Referrals were made to ANY registered provider regardless of their affiliation with the Council.
CACFP staff provided Nutrition training as well as overseeing the program the same as CHDCA.
MAT training and Health and Safety training have been provided through the Council.
"Casual" or "Legally Exempt" providers were processed and investigated through the Council in cooperation with the Department of Social Services.
The Council also supported the work of many other local not for profits and organizations through attendance at meetings and participation in fund raisers. "

" Recently I retired from daycare after many years of being a licensed daycare provider. I had joined Cayuga County Home Daycare in the late 1980’s when the organization was just getting started. When USDA/CACFP was offered I very happily joined the program. We were taught the correct nutrition and my daycare children were definitely benefitted. When they offered training toward my license requirements, I took advantage of the great presenters’ experience. A small annual dues was all I needed to pay for free training and no cost to belong to the food program. I never went to the Council of the Finger Lakes and I guess I am glad I never did. I can say without hesitation that Cayuga County Home Daycare helped make me a successful provider. Just ask my former daycare parents and their children. "

" As a child care provider, I am sickened that the council is closing. So many providers depend on the child care council to help them comply with all the state mandates that are imposed on them. The Staff at the Council have always gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the providers have everything they need to continue to provide quality daycare for the community. This loss will be felt by many. Lisa, Cindy, Kathy, Bonnie and the rest of the staff at the council, I'd like to thank you all for doing such a great job. I wish you all well in your travels and hope we come full circle again someday. "
