Brad Molloy: Heart aching over a love lost

I relearned another life lesson these past couple of weeks, and that, of course, is that love is blind.

We've all experienced that “take your breath away” moment when meeting that someone special for the first time. Suddenly your thoughts start racing a mile a minute, you can't sleep, and you certainly can't think straight, all because your heart is telling you that this is “the one.” The truth of the matter is that it isn't so much the person we're thinking about but, the possibilities that the individual represents. And this has been my mentality ever since I first walked through that front door and feasted my eyes on bare wood floors, a tiled shower, and glass blocked walls.

You see, my heart was longing not for a sweet voiced, hourglass figure with soft skin but, a house with vinyl siding and a deck overlooking the river. You see, after years of renting, I finally decided I wanted to purchase my first home. Who says I don't want to settle down? For me, I was just waiting for the right one. And, like any relationship, whether that be feminine or framework, I knew there would be issues to overcome. But I figured after some time and tender loving care, the end result would be something I could live with.

So there I was in the doorway when I went from being an adult, to a schoolboy having his first crush. My rose-colored glasses were all I could see through as I went from room to room. The only problem with those glasses though is that, although they might be on, they certainly weren't in the best focus.

Around every corner there was something new to experience, and I realized as I walked the property why it is that convicted felons get marriage proposals in prison from absolute strangers. Everyone who has been bitten by the love bug can only see the potential and will quickly write off any major flaws as simple quirks of character.

The hole in the roof wasn't a potential for water damage so much as a way for natural light to come into the kitchen. The rusty water coming out of the pipes was, through my eyes, not a bad thing but the house's way of making sure I was going to get my daily dose of vitamins and minerals. To me the house was filled with life, albeit the life was mostly in the form of ants and termites. But that didn't matter. No one's perfect.

I'd love to say that this little tale ends with me getting the girl, um, sorry, the house, but just like in school, someone else will be taking this beauty to the prom. And just like that, my pipe dream went down the tubes.

Am I sad? A little. Will there be another one just for me? Of course. But as anyone who has ever felt that pang in the heart knows, you never forget your first.

I laugh at the 'Money Pit' movie because it is so my house. Plus in the movie Tom Hanks plays 'Walter'

It is nice to own your own home for the sheer pleasure of doing what you want to it!
But when following a 'Walter' what should be a simple chore turns into a costly time consuming major overhaul...lol "

I've been on both sides of that fence now, and I must say, I think I prefer being a homeowner. For my entire adult life, I rented -- mostly because I could not afford to buy. But when I finally found a decent job, I kept on renting. As a now-single person, I didn't think I could handle all the maintenance and upkeep usually done by the landlord/landlady or that person's agents.

But so far, with a little help from friends from time to time, I'm doing OK. And no more nutty apartment managers shooting tenant's cats or having bipolar explosions on my front steps. What a relief not to be under someone else's thumb day and night for my housing!

If I ever even think of installing a pool, would someone please slap me hard? The original cost, the cost of upkeep, the work, the additional insurance -- none of it is worth the trouble, no matter how much you love to swim. A former owner had a pool -- and removed it. Wise move. Maybe it's time to cut your losses, cm. I know it's an above-ground pool, so maybe you can sell it. ;-) "

How great to have fresh oranges from 2 trees!
How great to have fresh grapefruit regular and ruby!

THEN reality sinks in:
wasn't it great when the landlord sent someone to mow the lawn?
wasnt it great to NOT constantly pick up oranges and grapefruits day after day?
How many times a week do I have to clean this pool?
and of course after I 'chemical' it, doesnt it rain? errrgggg..

THEN, the 'money pit' seems to sink in!
the previous owner (walter) THOUGHT he was an electrician, plumber, and carpenter...
HE WAS NONE of them!
any room we remodeled costed us an extra 500.00
(walterism, as we called it)

Oh the joys of just calling the landlord to come fix the A/C, the hot water tank, the leaky roof, or a pipe bursting inside the wall...
THOSE DAYS ARE GONE!

so be careful what you wish for,
the grass isn't always greener,
and always be ready to expect the unexpected!

Now, go watch the "Money Pit" movie, think of me and my house, and laugh along with me! lol "
