An Auburn woman accused of acting as a getaway driver for three Brooklyn teenagers involved in a city shooting last week may have had her vehicle's windows shot out by one of the witnesses earlier that day, the Auburn Police Department said Monday.
Detective Douglas Parker said the APD is investigating claims that a witness shot out the back window of a Jeep Liberty owned by Leslie Jo Peltier, 52, of 238 State St., who has been charged in connection with a June 10 shooting at Washington and Seymour streets.
In a written statement given to police, Peltier also said a witness had pointed a gun at her Jeep as she followed her son down Seymour Street earlier in the day. She said she saw the man point something that looked like a pistol first at her son's vehicle, and then at her vehicle. She said she ducked down because she thought she could get shot. When she got home, a friend pointed out to her that the back window of her car had been shot out earlier in the day.
After that incident, Peltier is accused of returning to the intersection at 7:30 p.m. with Daquan Alfonz Breland, 19, Jacquan Cleveland Breland, 19, and Nigee Cleveland William Sanders, 16, all of Brooklyn, to carry out an attack with shotguns, police said. The Brelands are accused of exiting the vehicle with two 12-gauge shotguns and opening fire on a group of people standing near the witness Peltier claimed pointed a gun at her, police said. Peltier and Sanders stayed in the vehicle, police have said.
According to court documents, the teenagers are accused of firing more than three Remington deer slugs at the group, superficially wounding a 31-year-old man as he ran for cover.
Police said they believe the man was hit by bullet wadding and not an actual slug.
In her written statement, Peltier said she bought the shotguns from Dick's Sporting Goods after two of the involved witnesses stole $150 from her when they burglarized her home earlier last week. One of those witnesses is also the same man Peltier has accused of shooting at her.
According to court documents, a nearby driver told police they saw a Jeep with a missing rear window flee the scene after the shooting. The witnesses also said the driver matched Peltier's description, and that there where three men in the vehicle armed with shotguns.
All four individuals were arrested by the APD at Peltier's home several hours later.
Peltier pleaded not guilty in Auburn City Court Monday to fourth-degree conspiracy and attempted assault, and bail was lowered to $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
Bail was originally set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond by Cayuga County Judge Thomas Leone Friday, but City Judge Michael McKeon said he saw no immediate reason to set her bail higher than her codefendants, who are also in the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
Both Brelands pleaded not guilty to the same charges in city court Thursday and Sanders is expected to be arraigned today.
