Former Auburn Mayor Timothy Lattimore is seeking elected office again, only this time he has his sights set on the Cayuga County Office Building instead of city hall.
Lattimore picked up the Cayuga County Republican Committee endorsement Monday to run for county legislator in District 13, a city seat currently held by Democrat Dan Schuster, who has not said if he will seek re-election.
Lattimore's political career has included elected office as both an Auburn city councilor and as mayor, a seat he held from 2004 through 2007. He lost his re-election bid in 2007 to current Democratic Mayor Michael Quill.
“He has served the city as a member of the council and as mayor, and we saw this as sort of a natural progression,” GOP committee secretary Tom Prystal Jr. said Monday night.
Lattimore currently does not live within District 13, so he will have to relocate prior to the election, Prystal said.
The committee also chose to endorse incumbent city councilor Matt Smith and District 11 legislator Linda Murphy in their re-election bids. The committee did not choose candidates for the other city council seat, a position currently held by Democrat William Graney. No GOP candidates were endorsed for the Legislature District 15 seat held by Democrat Cynthia Aikman, either.
The county committee gave its backing to incumbent county treasurer James Orman.
In addition to those seats, Prystal said, candidates have been endorsed by individual district committees outside Auburn. Those nominees include incumbent county legislators Christopher Palermo, District 1; David Axton, District 3; George Fearon, District 7 and Steve Cuddeback, District 9. Paul Pinckney, an Aurelius Town Board member, has been endorsed in the race to replace retiring District 5 legislator Ray Lockwood.
The county Republican Committee meeting was the first of several planned this week by the local parties. The Conservative Party is scheduled to meet tonight, the Democrats are planning to meet Wednesday and the Independence Party meets Thursday.
