CICERO - Last season in the Section III, Class C semifinals, the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team defeated LaFayette and went on to win a sectional title.

The Lancers, though, got their revenge in a 14-10 win over the defending champs in the Section III, Class C finals at Cicero-North Syracuse High School Friday. Earlier in the season, the Lancers snapped the Lakers 11-game win streak with a 13-9 win, giving Skaneateles its only loss of the season.

Junior Miles Thompson and sophomore Lyle Thompson took the game over for the Lancers as they scored nine goals combined.

“Having them is huge,” Lancers head coach Mike Riese said. “The understand the game so well, it's like having coaches on the field.”

Miles Thompson finished with five goals and three assists, while Lyle Thompson had four goals and four assists for the Lancers. Gehnew Printup scored two goals. Jeremy Beresovoy, John Greeley and Nate Beresovoy each had a goal, Greeley also had an assist.

The Lakers and Lancers exchanged goals in the first quarter. The two teams were knotted at 1-1, but Nate Hunt scored a goal for the Lakers to put them up 2-2 - the only lead they would have by the end of the day.

With just under a minute left in the quarter, the Lancers went on a 3-0 run to widen the gap.

“That's based on the end result,” Lakers head coach Ron Doctor said. “When you look at games like this between two competitive teams you get that kind of a run based on strength. It's a tough road back, but we let it happen.”

To close out the first half the Lancers' defense held Skaneateles scoreless, while also picking up two more goals to take a 7-2 lead.

“We wanted to make sure we play a total team defense,” Lancers defensive coordinator Brad Powless said.

The start of the second half saw the Lakers come out with a quick goal that took only 13 seconds by Paul O'Donnell - his only goal on the game - but the Lancers then went on a 2-0 run in response.

“They have three or four player above the high school level,” Doctor said. “They work at that.”

Skaneateles offense was mixed around with Kevin Rice, Thomas Schoener and Kevin Castle leading the strike with two goals each. Kyle Baier, Nate Hunt, Kyle Christine and O'Donnell each had a goal. Baier led the Lakers with three assists, while Schoener and O'Donnell each had an assist of their own.

“Some of our kids on offense are pretty young,” Doctor said. “We took some ill-advised shots in the first half during LaFayette's run.”

Cal Winkelman finished with five saves for the Lakers.

Heading into the finals, the Lakers defense had allowed just nine goals in the tournament and averaged 4.9 goals allowed per game, but an explosive offense proved to be too strong for them.

“It's a tough thing to play against Skaneateles,” Riese said. “Their strength is the defense. What they do with their packages and slides, but they have a few weaknesses with those and we did whatever we could to expose them.”

The Lancers last sectional crown came in 2005, but this year, defeating the defending champions was something they had hoped for after their season ended last year.

“It feels really good anytime you play Skaneateles well,” Powless said.

LaFayette (21-0) plays Section IV Seton Catholic in the first round of states next week, while Skaneateles ends its season at 19-2.

“To me, its encouraging and should be for individual players too,” Doctor said. “They need to know they can do this again next year. We have a good core of players. We can look at our future.”
