HIT: To Doug Waterbury and Bonnie Scoville on their success in bringing more tourists to Cayuga County.
Waterbury operates the Sterling Renaissance Festival and the Screamer's Hollow Halloween attraction in Sterling, and Scoville owns the Pleasant Beach Hotel in Fair Haven. Both were recognized this week by the Cayuga County Tourism Board for enhancing tourism in the northern part of the county.
MISS: To the Auburn City Council for scheduling the public hearing on the city's new budget proposal for 4:30 p.m.
The council's switch to “summer hours” means that very few members of the public will be able to attend city meetings, and that's especially unfortunate for a meeting at which the public is invited to weigh in on the budget.
Even if members of the council believe they are justified in meeting earlier during the summer, they should have rearranged their personal schedules just this once and held the public hearing at 7 p.m., when more people would have an opportunity to attend.
HIT: To the possibility that another nationally-recognized political figure may visit Auburn. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is scheduled to attend Auburn's Founders Day celebration and now comes news that the Auburn YMCA-WEIU, celebrating its 150th anniversary, has invited Vice President Joe Biden to speak.
Biden has well-known Auburn ties, his first wife was an Auburn native and he has spoken at YMCA and Cayuga Community College events in the past.
HIT: To Majorpalooza, the party/fundraiser which is held on Memorial Day Weekend in Sennett. The event has been increasing in popularity the last few years and this year was its best yet.
Exceeding expectations, more than $7,000 was raised to be distributed to local charities. It looks like Majorpalooza has become a Memorial Day tradition as much as the Duck Derby and parade through downtown Auburn.
